MECHANISM PROJECT
I. Suspension and steering mechanisms
a) Make a thorough investigation into the types and characteristics of the suspension (front and rear) and steering
mechanisms of passenger cars and present synthetically possible options, with advantages and disadvantages
(min. 5 pages). Indicate links and pairs; calculate the degree of freedom of the mechanisms.
b) Present the main steering and wheel alignment angles.
II. Design of a suspension mechanism
Design and analyze a double wishbone / MacPherson suspension mechanism. The mechanism will be considered
planar and the car-body fixed.
Design data:
 Lower control arm length .......... (270 … 360) mm
 Scrub radius (pivot angle radius) ......... (-60 … -20 mm, MacPherson), ....... (+40 … +60 mm double wishbone)
 Steering axis inclination (swivel pin inclination or kingpin) ........ (4 … 10 degrees)
 Camber angle 1 … 3 degrees
 Ration of lower control arm and upper control arm length (for double wishbone suspensions): 1.3 … 1.6
 Lower control arm inclination: -10 … -3 degrees
 Upper control arm inclination: 5 … 20 degrees
 Chose the appropriate tire radius, axle track and the position of the spring, and damper.
The project will include:
a) The structural diagram of the mechanism; links and pairs; the degree of freedom of the mechanism; kinematic
groups; the unspecified dimensions and a scale representation.
b) Perform a first analysis by graphical methods and measure the variation of the axle track, camber angle and the
spring length at tire bound and rebound. Present the results using tables and curves.
c) Write and solve the loop closure equation. Present numerical results for 5 positions specified at b).
d) Based on results at c), propose an improved solution and explain why it is better for the car. Conclusions and
final dimensions.
III. Gears
Design and analyze a gear mechanism composed by a gear pair connected to a planetary gear (carrier as output).
Design data:
 Gear ratio i = … + (order nr. in the group) / …
The project will include:
a. Schematic representation of the mechanism; compute the analytical gear ratio.
b. Choose the number of teeth for each gear and compute the gears’ geometry.
