C-201 (Water based Polymer quenchant)

C-201 is the most versatile polymer that quenches like oil without the disadvantages of oil. C-201 is based on high
molecular weight poly alkylene glycol which provides quenching qualities of water, oil and martempering salts. Upon
initial immersion of hot component into C-201 solution an insulating polymer film, which controls the heat transfer, is
formed around the hot metal. The heat transfer properties of C-201, is dependent upon film thickness and the viscosity of
the polymer.
The cooling rate of C-201 solution is influenced by solution temperature agitation and concentration. Eg.

1) Higher concentration - Lower cooling rate.

2) Higher temperature - Lower cooling rate.
3) Higher agitation - Faster cooling rate.

Because of inverse solubility principle, insoluble film of polymer is deposited on hot metal surface quenched which
dissolves as soon the temperature of quenched components drops below 70C. Therefore, very thin film of polymer
remains on the components and hence drag out losses are very low.

Success of C-201 solution as a quenchant also depends upon steel composition, component geometry and thickness of the
cross section.
Corrosion inhibitors added in C-201 protect quench tanks, pipes, inductors and other fittings from corrosion.

Recommended Applications :
1) Variety of components like forgings, gears, crank shafts, axles, steel bars, circlips, fasteners, coil springs etc.
2) Various steel grades successfully quenched in C-201:
SAE 1040, 1045, 1038, 1060, 1080, 4130, 4340, 4140, 8037, and 52100. Also combined grades SAE 1010, 8620, And
carbonitrided grades SAE 1022.

Advantages against Oil Quenchants :

a) Environmental Advantages.
1)Elimination of fire hazard thus no need of costlier equipment’s such as inert gas, curtains or fire extinguishing
system.
2) No smoke or fumes and hence free from air pollution.
3) No oily, slippery, messy floors.
b) Technical Advantages.
1) Flexibility of quenching speed.
2) Tolerance to water contamination.
3) Ease of tank cleaning and disposal.
4) Reduces maintenance cost on cooling system.

c) Production Advantages
1) C-201 solution has practically double the specific heat when compared to quenching oil
(specific heat of oil is 0.52 cal/gm/C and specific heat of C-201 at 15% conc. is 0.96
cal/gm/C)
2) Because of practically double the specific heat, temperature rise during quenching, of
given charge weight, is half of that of the oil. Therefore, C-201 permits higher work load
throughputs and lower capacity heat exchangers.

Advantages against water quenching:

A) Elimination soft spots.
B) Reduction of stresses and distortion.
C) Elimination of cracking.
D) Low maintenance cost.
E) Elimination of rusting.

How to prepare tank when changing over from oil to C-201 :

When you are changing from oil system to C-201 following procedure is to be followed up for
maximum efficiency and accurate results.

1) Clean the oil system with alkaline degreasing agent or steam. Remove the sludge. Flush off
heat exchangers and circulate water through entire system. Make sure system is completely
cleaned and no oil residue is left.
2) Make sure that all the contact parts throughout the system are made up of steel.
3) Fill up the tank 70% of its capacity with soft (preferably deionized water) and then add C-
201 to desired concentration.
4) Mix the solution by circulation pump and make up the operating level with water or
polymer C-201 depending upon the requirement.
5) Maintain bath solution temperature between 27 - 500C for best uniformity of results.

A) Control of bath concentration:-

Concentration of C-201 solution can be found out by determining Kinematic Viscosity at 40C
or by finding out refractive index of the solution. Refractive index method, though easier, but not
very accurate, if the solution is contaminated with oil, and water soluble salts.

Determination of Kinematic Viscosity :

Fill up the C-201 solution about 3/4th of the bulb of viscometer tube and insert the tube into
thermostatically controlled water bath. When the temperature of agitating bath reaches to 40OC
suck the solution upto the upper mark of the bulb and note down the time required in seconds to
flow the solution from upper to lower mark level.
Time in seconds X Tube constant will give Kinematic Viscosity in terms of Centi strokes
(cSt)We give below the approximate Kinematic Viscosity @ 40C Vs Concentration of C-
201 solution
Kinematic Viscosity @ 40C cSt Concentration % v/v
1.25 5
1.88 10
3.10 15
4.84 20
7.02 25
9.55 30

(Values will differ marginally from batch to batch)

Refractive Index Method :

Clean the glass lens and cover with tap water and ensure that the Refractometer shows `O’
reading then dry the lens with soft tissue or cotton.
Then place a drop of filtered C-201 solution on the lens. Close the cover and through eye piece
pointing instrument toward light read the redg brix %. For proper visibility of shaded area
additional drop of C-201 solution liquid may be added on the lens.

% of C-201 = % Brix X 2.5( RI of C 201) Please note once the bath becomes old then
consider RI as 2.2 to calculate the concentration of the bath solution.
