Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.

Let Us Study

Reproductive Hormones and Their Functions

Reproductive hormones are chemical substances that initiate sexual

development essential for human reproduction. The start of sexual maturity
happens during puberty stage and it is determined by the amount of
reproductive hormones released in the brain. The level of these reproductive
hormones increases relatively as we reach puberty.

Below is the list of reproductive hormones and their corresponding functions.

REPRODUCTIVE
SECRETED BY FUNCTION
HORMONE
Gonadotropin Releasing Hypothalamus
• Stimulates the
Hormone (GnRH)
pituitary gland to
release Follicle
Stimulating Hormone
(FSH) and Luteinizing
Hormone (LH).
Follicle Stimulating Pituitary Gland
• Follicle stimulators of
Hormone (FSH)
the ovaries and testes
to begin the production
of egg cells and sperm
cells.
• Stimulates the
synthesis of sex steroid
hormones (estrogen,
progesterone, and
testosterone).
Luteinizing Hormone Pituitary Gland
• Aids the FSH to hasten
(LH)
the maturity of egg
cells and sperm cells
by producing more
estrogen and
testosterone.
Testosterone Testes/ Adrenal

voice as vocal chords

enlargement due to the
increased production
and maturity of sperm
cells.
Ovaries
• Maintains healthy
reproductive tissues

Estrogen Ovaries
• Stimulates the
(Sex Steroid Hormone)
maturity of egg cells
• Responsible for the
development of
primary female
secondary sex
characteristics such as
breast development
where fats are collected
in the breast’s
connective tissues
causing it to enlarge
• Thickens the uterine
lining during ovulation
Adrenal Gland
• Aids in the maturity of
sperm cells
Progesterone Ovaries
• Aids estrogen in the
(Sex Steroid Hormone)
thickening of the
uterine lining
Testes
• Stimulates the
production of
testosterone

Let Us Practice

Activity 1: His and Her

Direction: The table below is a checklist of reproductive hormones.
Mark the box with (✓) if the indicated hormone is present in both male and
female, (X) if not present. Briefly explain the role of these hormones in the
respective sexes by writing their corresponding function/s. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Questions:

1. Are reproductive hormones in male similar to the reproductive

hormones present in female?

2. Are these hormones having similar functions in male and female

reproductive systems?

Good Job! The next activity is for you to relate the role of reproductive
hormones in the body changes you have experienced during puberty.

4
Let Us Practice More

Activity 2: When Puberty Hits You Hard

Direction: Complete the cause-and-effect graphic organizer by identifying the

reproductive hormone/s that cause/s the given sexual characteristics
observed in the body during puberty. Explain the effect of these hormones.

Puberty is the beginning of sexual maturity and it is seen in the sexual

characteristics of both sexes. These sexual characteristics are determined
by sex steroid hormones.

5
Let Us Remember

• Reproductive hormones are sex hormones that trigger sexual maturity

which is important for human reproduction.

• Puberty is a life stage in which a person reaches sexual maturity.

• GnRH or Gonadotropin releasing hormone is secreted by the

hypothalamus of the brain which stimulates the pituitary to release
FSH and LH.

• Follicle Stimulating Hormone or FSH stimulates the ovaries and

testes to begin the production of egg cells and sperm cells.

• Luteinizing Hormone or LH is released by the pituitary gland in the

brain to aid the FSH in the maturity of gametes (egg cells and sperm
cells).

• Estrogen is a primary sex steroid hormone in female that stimulates

the maturity of the egg cells and develops sexual characteristics of
female. While males produce little amount of estrogen needed for spem
cell maturity.

• Progesterone also a sex steroid hormone aids estrogen for egg cell
maturity and in the thickening of endometrium or lining of the uterus.
It also promotes the production of testosterone in men.

• Testosterone is the primary sex steroid hormone of men responsible

for secondary sex characteristics and maturity of the sperm cells. In
female, little amount of testosterone is needed to ensure healthy
reproductive tissues.

6

Let Us Enhance

Activity 3: Fill in the Blanks

Direction: Study the concept map and summarize the concepts by filling in
the blanks with the hormones to help explain how they affect the reproductive
systems.

At the start of puberty, the hypothalamus located in the brain sends 1.

___________ to the 2. ____________ gland. This will trigger the pituitary gland
to release 3. _____________ and 4. __________________. For males, the FSH will
enter the testes and the hormone 5. _________________ stimulates
spermatogenesis to produce 6._______ cells. In females, the hormones 7.
_____________ and 8. _______________ are released from the ovaries and more
of these hormones will be released from the developing follicles. All of these
hormones in both sexes play important roles in the development of
reproductive systems, body changes or secondary sex characteristics.

Good job for accomplishing the module. You may now give your learning
insights for this Lesson by answering the question in the “Let Us Reflect”
Section.
