What is the importance of Selfies in our image making culture?
Suppose you have a hidden
selfie from 100 years ago. You can know exactly what the weather was like, what clothes people were wearing, what movies they were watching, activities, and more. Imagine being able to look at geocached locations, see how they have changed over the years, and see how people interact with them. environment. This is important because self-portraits and paintings are no longer just for the 1%. For the first time ever, the lives of people from all walks of life can be recorded at any time. Only the wealthy could afford to make paintings and self-portraits, so we have no idea what life was like for most people throughout history. Why do we seem to enjoy looking at other people’s Selfies, especially celebrities? The camera just likes some people. It's a little strange, but when you change 3D to 2D, your perception of that person changes. It lengthens or compresses features depending on focal length, but it's something I simply like because I personally find it more attractive or seen as more traditionally attractive in celebrity selfies It has to do with optics and the dynamics of light and natural biological selection over millions of years. Why do some of us make them in such large quantities? There is a myriad of reasons as to why. One of the common reasons is insecurity. For me, I believe it’s because that individual’s selfies may look more attractive and likable than photos of them taken by other people. Is it a sign that we are becoming ever more self-obsessed, or can we see this phenomenon as a positive means of creative self-expression? For some people it's a form of self-expression. Some people are trying to find connection and stay accountable to their goals. I believe the vast selection of filters nowadays can lead a person to being perceived as self- obsessed. Have human beings always been interested in seeing their own faces or is this a new thing? I believe this is a new thing. Like I stated before, some people are just not photogenic. But with the abundance of filters that are created for our phones and social media apps, the viewing of our facial structures has become more tolerable. Especially with the many features on cameras and photo editing software. How many Selfies do you take a week? I have an iPhone so it’s inevitable that you will take many selfies of yourself given the great quality of our camera lens. Mine range from about 5-10 a week. What do you do with them? Mostly post them on my social media accounts. Sometimes they stay in my phone for a while. Then when I feel like it, I would do a photo dump on one of my social media accounts. What do you think is the reason why taking Selfies has become so popular? Not speaking for myself, but for my generation it’s because people get self-esteem boosts with how many likes they get on their selfie. For someone to like their own face they must make sure it is social media approved. It is all about wanting other people's approval. Is there a downside to the taking and sharing of Selfies? I wouldn’t necessarily say there is a downside to taking them. However, sharing them is a different story. I would say just make sure what photos of you that you share are the ones that can’t trace any kind of personal info of you. You know what they say, once it’s on the internet, it’s on their forever. What are the rules or conventions of taking a Selfie? Some of the general rules are having a good camera, lighting, having multiple takes and creating a good angle and position of the camera. All of that comes with practice. Look at other Selfies for inspiration and remember you don’t have to post your photos. Where do these come from? These are general rules for taking a nice photo of yourself. Is it ok to break these rules? Of course! That’s why it’s important to take many photos of yourself to see what YOU can do to improve. Be creative!
