EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI
4

OVERVIEW|
According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), a magnitude 6.0
earthquake struck Mabini, Batangas at 3:09 PM last April 8, 2017. Intensity VII was recorded in Mabini,
Batangas while varying intensities were monitored in other places in Batangas, Cavite, Oreintal Mindoro,
Bulacan, Metro Manila, Quezon, Pampanga and Camarines Norte. Several aftershocks were monitored after
the earthquake; however, PHIVOLCS issued a no tsunami advisory from this incident. The National Council
has coordinated with its Regional DRRM Council in CALABARZON to monitor the initial effects of the
earthquake. An emergency meeting was held between the RDRRMC and Mabini Mayor Britics Luistro to
discuss the immediate needs of the community as well as the assessment of damages incurred from the
earthquake.
An earthquake is a natural phenomenon that is characterized by a sudden, violent shifting of massive
plates underneath the earth’s surface. The movement of plates releases stress that generates along geologic
faults.

SCI-CORE| EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI

An earthquake is a trembling or shaking movement of the ground, caused by the
slippage or rupture of a fault within the earth’s crust. A sudden slippage or rupture along
fault line result in an abrupt release of elastic energy stored in rocks that are subject to
great strain. This energy can be built up and stored over long time and then released in
second or minutes. Strain on the rocks results in more elastic energy being stored which
leads to far greater possibility of an earthquake event. The sudden release of energy during
an earthquake causes low-frequency sound waves called seismic waves to propagate
through the earth’s crust or long it surface.

Every year more than 3 million earthquakes take place, most of these unnoticed by
humans. In contrast, a severe earthquake if the most frightening and catastrophic event of
nature which can occur anywhere on the surface of our planet. Although usually lasting
only seconds, a severe earthquake densely populated area may have catastrophic effects
causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people, injuries, destruction and enormous
damage to the economies of the affected area.

An earthquake occurs because of sudden shifts in the earth’s crust across a fault. The
displacement of a fault and motion of the earth’s crust may release energy. Earthquake
may occur in land and under the sea. Earthquake that occurs under the sea may cause
tsunami.

Earthquake has 4 types. It includes tectonic, volcanic, collapse, and explosion.

Tectonic Earthquake – is one that occurs when the

earth’s crust breaks due to geological forces on
rocks and adjoining plates that cause physical and
chemical changes.

Volcanic Earthquake – that result from tectonic

forces which occur in conjunction with volcanic
activity.

Collapse Earthquake- is small earthquake in

underground caverns and mines that are caused
by seismic wave produced from the explosion.

Explosion Earthquake- is an earthquake that is the

result of the detonation of a nuclear and/or
chemical device.

For deeper understanding of the lesson, read “forces within “on page 27-34 of your
textbook.

SCIENCE 10| Module 4 Worksheet

Name:_______________________________Grade and Section: _______________Date:___________

SCI-BUILDER| Do the activity, “Wave Slinky”. Follow the procedure and

answer the Analysis Questions:
Objective: To differentiate P-waves (primary waves) from S-waves (Secondary waves).

Materials: Metal slinky, stopwatch

“WAVE SLINKY”

Procedure:
A. P-waves
1) Stretch the slinky at least two meters between you and your partner.
2) Practice first by slightly pulling the metal slinky toward you and then pushing it away.
Notice that a wave travels along the slinky, from you to your partner.
3) Perform three trials of the P-waves, timing the wave as it does one complete trip (back
and forth). Record your observations.
4) Complete the three trials. Get the average time.
B. S-waves
1) Stretch the slinky at least two meters between you and your partner.
2) Shake one end of the slinky from side to side. Notice that a different type of wave travels
along the slinky. Note that the sections of the slinky move horizontally, but the movement
of the slinky is at right angles to the direction of the progressing wave.
3) Perform three trials of the P-waves, timing the wave as it does one complete trip (back
and forth). Record your observations.
4) Complete the three trials. Get the average time.
Analysis Questions:
1) Which was faster among the waves that you have observed – the P or the S waves?

2) What is the difference between longitudinal waves and transverse waves?

3) How do your answer to the previous number relate to P- waves and S- waves?

Every year of uncertainty, we are tested by different forces of nature like
earthquakes and tsunamis. As one Vincentian family who advocates helping people in
need, not only in material things but also having faith in God, what can you do to extend
help to the people who will be affected by some natural phenomena? Explain your
answer. A rubric is provided for your reference.
