Action Research
on
Intensity & Magnitude
of Earthquake
I. Introduction
Our next topic for this action research is the Intensity & Magnitude of Earthquake.
For some of my classmates this topic may have been discussed during our early years
in high school. But I am tasked for today to discuss the definition, origin of an
earthquake and to differentiate to the intensity and magnitude of an earthquake.
Nevertheless, we would start first with introduction or my personal birds-eye-view of the
topic. The definition of an Earthquake is simply the shaking of the ground or surface of
the Earth that is cause by an energy that is released.
And our main topics are intensity & magnitude of an Earthquake which measure
different characteristics of earthquakes. And later in the discussion I would explain you
more or in depth the definition and uses of the in intensity & magnitude. Also later I
would explain that devices are used to record an earthquake and I hope that you would
learn more about the Intensity & Magnitude of Earthquake and its purposes.
II. Discussion
A good day to you, today I will teach and discuss you first the definition and origin
or cause of an earthquake and the definition and uses of the in intensity & magnitude.
And I hope that in the end of this discussion it would help you understand more about
this topic and learn more about earthquakes. So let us start first with the definition of an
earthquake which according to the encyclopedia an earthquake is any sudden shaking
of the ground caused by the passage of seismic waves through Earth’s rocks. While
seismic waves are produced when some form of energy stored in Earth’s crust is
suddenly released, usually when masses of rock straining against one another suddenly
fracture and “slip.”
And last is Tsunamis, which are popularly known as ``tidal waves,'' are a grave
hazard to many parts of the world, particularly around the Pacific Ocean. Tsunamis are
a series of water waves caused when the seafloor moves vertically in an earthquake.
Now let us move to our main topic which is about the Intensity & Magnitude of
Earthquake and its purposes.
Scientists measure both the energy released in an earthquake and its damage.
Let us start first with magnitude of an earthquake; a magnitude is the measure of the
amount of energy an earthquake releases. And a precise scale for measuring the
magnitude of earthquakes is used which is commonly known as “Richter magnitude
scale” and it is recorded and calculated using information gathered by a seismograph.
And an example of the scale is seen below:

Now that we reached the end of discussion, I would like to express my gratitude to
you for reading this action research. And I really hope that you have learned a lot from
this action research and hopefully I helped and educate you more in Intensity &
Magnitude of Earthquake
2. Earthquake- a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust by the abrupt rupture
and rebound of rocks in which elastic strain has been slowly accumulating.
6. Richter Scale- is a scale of numbers used to tell the size of earthquakes. Charles
Richter developed the Richter scale in 1935. His scale was based on the seismogram
measured by a particular type of seismometer at a distance of 100 kilometers (62 mi)
from the earthquake
9. Seismic Waves- are the waves of energy caused by the sudden breaking of rock
within the earth or an explosion.
10. Tsunamis- giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea.
