TOPIC: SOCIAL JUSTICE

INTRDODUCTION

In this module it will explain the concept of justice as taught by the

Church. The message of 1971 Synod written in Pope VI’s encyclical, Justice in

the dignity and rights of one’s neighbor” (cf. NCDP,310).

At the end of the lesson, you are required to do the following

1. Discuss the meaning, concept, component and properties of justice.

2. Perform acts of justice and acts of charity.
3. Pray for God for the love to reign in everyone’s heart so that justice will
reign in our society.

CHURCH TEACHINGS
Social Justice is essential in showing equality of all people. It
states: “Since all (people) possess a rational soul and are created in
God’s likeness, since they have the same nature and origin, have been
redeemed by Christ and enjoy the same divine calling and destiny, the basic
equality of all must receive increasingly greater recognition.” GAUDIUM ET SPES

 3 properties of justice are:

1. EQUALITY- expresses the basic element of justice; a certain equality.

The “mean” of justice is the real mean of objectivity: one gives to
another “what is due to him,” neither more nor less.”
2. INDEBTEDNESS – as a property of justice signifies that the demand of
justice is not answered by a gift but by the obligation to pay back what
belongs to another.
3. OTHERNESS- refers to the fact that justice is always directed to
another person, the subject of rights

 Four Components of Justice:

1. SUFFICIENT life goods: these are the basic goods. They constitute the
human person’s economic rights. Their ethical basis is the principle of
stewardship.
2. Dignity of the person – entails the recognition of the unique worth of
every human being and groups of human beings. This unique worth
constitutes the cultural rights. The ethical basis is the creation of the
human person in the image and likeness of God.
3. Participation: this is the power of each person and people to share their
own destinies. It constitutes the person’s political rights, in particular
free speech and free assembly. The ethical basis is Jesus’ call to every
person to contribute to the building of his Kingdom on earth.
4. Solidarity- it is the corresponding duty of each person and people to
promote human rights with and for others. The Ethical basis is that
human beings have been created in the image of God.
