DESIGN CONCEPT – BAYANIHAN through RED

( Restorative Environmental Design)

BAYANIHAN – a spirit of civic unity and cooperation among Filipinos

Designing using the Bayanihan idea creates a sense of togetherness around strength (structure),
speed (service), and dynamism (building form) with the applied approach of RED (restorative
environmental design)
-An approach that is beyond sustainability, one that aims to reverse the adverse impacts of
human developments and help restore the natural environment.

ARCHITECTURE
DESIGN PHILISOPHY
-The built and natural environment are equal partners in Architecture.
CONCEPT EXPLANATION
The design concept is to Integrate the Restorative Environmental Design in the facility that
intended to use in times of emergency and calamity, the concept is to
•provide through design a healthful benefit to occupants during calamities, this will benefit their
mental health and reduce stress level during the calamity
•reinforce the human connection with nature

What is a restorative environment?

In environmental psychology they have four main characteristics (Kaplan, 1995)

•Being away
•Effortless fascination
•Extent
•Compatibility
Restorative environments: Being away

How does one fulfill the sense of being away while inside a building?
•Indoor gardens
•Views of nature
•Water features
•Any location that is different enough from a typical workstation
(Wilson, 2008)
Restorative environments: Fascination

Natural patterns, shapes and forms allow the mind to effortlessly focus on something (Kellert,
2008; Wilson, 2008)
Restorative environments: Extent

Open spaces, ceilings with varying height, views of nature all provide a sense of extent
Restorative environments: Compatibility

Humans seems to have a natural affinity for nature

Restorative environmental design, on the other hand, provides a more holistic approach to the
design of buildings and environments. It marries green design principles with an approach that
seeks to connect nature and humanity. Two basic guidelines are organic design and vernacular
design.
Organic design (aka natural design) brings in elements of the natural world through shape, form,
color, materials and texture.
Vernacular design (aka place-based design) connects local culture, history, and ecology within
the built environment.
