READING
ARE YOU A DIGITAL DEVICE ADDICT?
a Teenagers and adults spend around 11 hours a day online, watching videos, reading, listening to
music or simply interacting with technology and media. 90% of time on our phones is spent checking
apps or social media. Instagram reports that users spend more than 32 minutes a day on that app
alone. Often, up to 50 minutes on the journey home from work is spent checking emails too.
b Do these facts surprise you? Are you dependent on technology? Do you ever feel like you need to
take a break from social media? Doctors are now saying that we should! In fact, studies have shown
that too much technology has negative effects on productivity, focus, sleep and mood. It may affect
our relationships with friends and family, and also our progress at school. Follow our dos and don’ts
and change your digital habits.
c 1 Do set rules for media use. Create a timetable. Having certain times of the day when you can or
can’t check social media will help you control how much time you spend online.
d 2 Don’t use your phone at mealtimes. It’s rude and, what’s more, life is something which you should
enjoy as it happens. Spend quality time with family and friends.
e 3 Don’t just message your friends. Meeting people face-to-face, having conversations and
developing relationships can be a challenge, but it’s one of the best things a human can do.
f 4 Do turn off notifications for apps and email, and don’t check your messages every time you hear a
‘ping’.
g 5 Don’t have a lot of tabs open on your screen. Trying to do too many things at once means we
spend more time on our laptops, phones or tablets and become even more distracted.
