The Kern High School District understands the seriousness of the evolving opioid crisis impacting the
country, communities, and schools. Last year, the District took a proactive approach to train its school
nurses and school police officers in the use of Narcan, which is an opioid antagonist medicine used to
reverse opioid overdoses. As a result, District nurses and police officers have already saved lives on
campuses, having administered Narcan five times at District schools this school year.

Regarding recent issues at North High School, its principal has been addressing parents' concerns
regarding opioid use on campus, and an investigation is being conducted. The District cannot provide
confidential medical and disciplinary information about specific instances due to privacy issues.

On Tuesday at 6 p.m. North High School is hosting a presentation in O'Neill Hall for parents about the
dangers of drugs, warning signs, and discussing community resources that are available.
Administrators, interventionists, and law enforcement will be presenting.

The Kern High School District's Student Behavior and Supports team has conducted over 40
presentations to students, staff, and parents about the dangers of drugs, including fentanyl, and will
continue to do so to help educate our community about the lethal dangers of drug use.

Additionally, the District is in the process of providing training to additional staff members regarding
the administration of Narcan.
