Project Management

Assignment 2 (chapter3)
2. Name the categories of skills that should be considered in the selection of a
project manager.
 There are 7 skills that should be considered in the selection of a project
manager.
1. Effective Communication
2. Negotiation
3. Scheduling and Time Management
4. Leadership
5. Technical Expertise
6. Risk Management
7. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
5. What are some of the essential characteristics of effective project team
members
 Excellent technical abilities
 Sensitivity to politics and in general
 A strong problem-solving orientation (rather than discipline-oriented)
 Goal-oriented personality (due to uneven workflow)
 Self-esteem (the ability to admit mistakes/failures)
4. What are the major differences between functional managers and project
managers?
 Functional managers and project managers are alike in many aspects.
However, there are still some major differences between them. While
project managers overseeing many functional areas, functional
managers primarily focus on mostly in charge of one functional dept (for
example: marketing, finance). Functional managers are known as the
direct, technical supervisors and as the specialists in the area they
manage. In contrast, project managers are generalists with a wide
background of experience and knowledge as well as facilitators.
Moreover, functional managers are analytically oriented, responsible for
4Ws 1H of each job/task while project managers have more skills at
synthesis and use systems approach. Not only that, project managers
rarely have in depth knowledge of all areas, but functional managers
know some details of each operation. They also know the technology to
advise and solve problems. However, project managers are inclined to
facilitate cooperation.
18. Project managers must be generalists rather than specialists. Yet, team
members need to have more specialized, technical skills. Can a generalist
manage a team of specialists effectively?
 Yes, the generalist must supervise a wide range of functional areas,
including quality, procurement, planning, manufacturing, contact. Even
though a team of specialists typically have more specialized knowledge
than a management specialist does, the generalist’s basic understanding
of a wide range of topics makes it easier for him to seek out information
more easily, because he is aware of what needs to be done, when it
needs to be done, and how the resources needed to complete the task
can be acquired. A management generalist only has to be able to
synthesize disparate tasks into a logical whole, he won’t be responsible
for personally acquiring specific knowledge. Project completed on
schedule, under budget, and up to specifications. What is more, they
only have the skill of communication, organizational, team building,
leadership and coping technological can manage the team effectively.
22. How is communication through art different than through language?
 Communication is essentially the transmission of ideas to others.
Graphic Design is used when this is accomplished through the use of
images, video, and text. Art has a similar definition. It is the expression
of ideas through images, sculptures, and so on.

 Art can be used to communicate in a variety of ways that do not rely on

words. They can be obvious at times, such as a celebratory image of a
political leader. Other times, artworks communicate through elements
that you may not notice at first, such as color selection, composition
(the underlying form and how elements relate to one another), or how
the forms are assembled or fractured.

 Art frequently explores broad ideas or themes, some more obvious than
others, and art frequently reflects on the era in which it was created,
whether as a statement of support or a reaction to something. Let's look
at three examples from different time periods to illustrate these points.
24. Do you agree that the trend now is to become less of a generic project
manager and more of a specialist? If so, then how do you gain a wide range of
experience for that next job opportunity?
 Without a doubt, project management may be invigorating and
satisfying, but it can also be exceptional and demanding, and it is not the
best career choice for everyone. That is why I agree that there is a
tendency toward managers being more specialized than generic project
managers since generalists may face certain difficulties such as job
insecurity, worthiness as well as direction. In order to gain a wide range
of experience for that next job opportunity, it is it is critical to remember
that generalists are made up of a number of so-called "soft" qualities
such as determination, keen thinking, rapid learning, acute awareness,
and people skills. Nowadays, soft skills are becoming increasingly
important as new business categories arise and altogether new,
nontraditional vocations emerge. Because it is simpler and widely
recognized to hold a stronger argument, screening methods frequently
focus on hard abilities; nonetheless, techniques should be examined and
reinvented to adapt to the continually changing global stage. After all, it
is more necessary than ever to employ flexible, adaptable, and quick-
thinking employees to drive a strategy that necessitates all the above.
