Hyperbole-A figure of speech that uses incredible exaggeration or overstatement for emphasis or

humour

Irony-Using inconsistency or contradiction to give different meaning to seemingly clear statements or


situations

Simile- Use words such as like and as to compare two unrelated objects.

Malapropism- use of a word which is similar in sound but different in meaning

Metaphor- do not use words like or as instead referring directly to one object with terms that normally
apply to another

Onomatopoea- the use of words whose sounds

Oxymoron- the combination of opposite or contradictory terms…Eg. Bitter sweet, jumbo shrimp

Paradox- A statement that seems to contradict itself but that often reveals a truth when viewed in a new
context

Personification- A literary device by which an object, idea, or animal is given human feelings

Pun- A device use to create humour by replacing a word with another word that is similar to the original
word, but that had a different meaning

Symbol- A person, place, thing, event that has a meaning in and of itself and also stands for something
more

Synecdoche- A term for a part of something which refers to the whole something

Understatement- A figure of speech that adds emphasis to an idea, often humorously, by intentionally
falling short of describing the full extent or magnitude of the subject

Euphemism- is a polite expression use in places of words
