Abstract
The study aims to explain the literary elements in Joseph Conrad's Dark Heart, explain the
form of imperialism described in Joseph Conrad's Dark Heart, and find out Conrad's
worldview of the subject. imperialism in the heart of darkness. To find out Conrad's
worldview, this study applies genetic structure theory. The data source for this study is from a
short story titled Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad published by Penguin Random House
LLC New York, 2017. Data collected by Reading and rereading Heart of Darkness,
highlighting enable data related to Imperialism and Conrad's World View.
This study reveals Conrad's shadowy depiction of economic imperialism and his worldview
of imperialism. Heart of Darkness recounts Marlow's journey in a steamship to the Congo
River. Marlow's trip to the Congo River aims to come after one of the company's leaders,
Mr.. Kurtz, was at one of the deepest stations in the Congo. Conrad's worldview of
imperialism is depicted from Marlow's point of view of imperialism expressed by Mr.. Kurtz
and reinforced by the setting chosen for the short story and the writer's background. Thus,
one can see that Conrad's worldview of imperialism is unstable.

Introduction
Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is a novella first published in 1899. While it was not
received overwhelmingly well upon its initial release, it has since gone on to become one of
the most analyzed texts in English literature. The novel's exploration of the themes of
colonialism and its effects on nations has sparked heated debate, and its representation of
colonized people and women has drawn criticism. Heart of Darkness shows the evils of
imperialism and the destruction it causes in Africa. The lack of opportunity for wealth and
social advancement pushed many Europeans to participate in it, like Marlow does in the
When he arrives in Africa, he sees the starving and tortured natives living alongside the
wealthy colonials. The natives are victims on their own land. The company and Kurtz treat
them as a means to an end. European nations had a pretense of bringing "civilization" to
Africa and other lands, but this was simply an excuse to dominate them and take control.
When he returns to Europe at the end of the story, Marlow is unsure who is the truly
uncivilized nation. Imperialism in Heart of Darkness is the source of the main conflict and
what changes Marlow's views of Europe and Africa. The "heart of darkness" is not just Africa
as described in the 19th century, but also the dark heart within humanity that is willing to lay
According to Lenin in Hawkins (1979), European economies developed and created a new
phase. It moves from competitive capitalism to monopoly capitalism. It can be concluded that
emerging imperialism is the development and continuation of capitalism (p. 289). Brewer
(1990) argues that imperialism must be seen in the context of the entire history of capitalism
on a global scale (p. 104). While Young (2015) notes that while imperialism operates from
the heart, it is a state policy and developed for ideological and financial reasons, colonialism
is the development for colonial or commercial purposes (pages 281-282). Furthermore, Lenin

process of division happened because of capitalism. Later, Lenin remarked that capitalists

of Polish descent. Conrad spent his childhood in the shadow of Russian oppression, where his
father was exiled for leading a revolt against Russian domination. He lost his father at the age
of eleven. Conrad went to Marseilles and became a sailor at the age of 16 to escape as much
of the Russian Empire as he could. At the age of 20, Conrad started learning English as a
third language after Polish and French. Conrad lives in a peaceful country that is
exceptionally open to immigrants and free from the political oppression that haunted his
childhood.
Heart of Darkness is a short story first published in 1899. This short story tells the story of
Marlow when his ship stopped at the River Thames, England. In this short story, Marlow is
the one who narrates everything he sees and feels on his journey. Marlow's story follows his
journey as the captain of a steamship on the Congo River. Marlow recounts his experience
traveling on a steamship in Africa, also known as the Congo. It was Marlow's job to pick up
Mr.. Kurtz, who was currently at one of Congo's train stations. To get to the inner station
where Mr.. Kurtz lived, Marlow passed through two other stations; Outside and inside. On his
journey to the inner station, Marlow witnesses the brutality of imperialism. Heart of Darkness
depicts imperialism in Congo, Africa. This novel shows how Africans suffered when
imperialism struck. Africans were treated like slaves, brutalized and killed. This short story
has been studied by several scholars on topics as varied as racism in Joseph Conrad's Novella
(Priscilla, 2016), Joseph Conrad's biography and historical record of Hearts of Darkness.
However, previous studies that discussed Joseph Conrad's worldview of imperialism on short
stories were never carried out. To find out the author's vision of the world, the author uses

Based on the context of the study, the researcher proposed two research questions:
1. What are the forms of imperialism in Joseph Conrad's Dark Heart of Darkness?
This research will contribute to the development of literary theory both theoretically and
practically. Theoretically, this study aims to analyze Conrad's dark heart using Lucien
Goldmann's genetic makeup. The researcher also hopes that the study will be useful to
anyone who needs it. Specifically, this study is intended to provide knowledge to readers
information in the analysis of genetic structuralism, especially the author's worldview in the
novel.
Research Methodology
1.Research Design
The research is qualitative in nature and it involves a study of “Darkness inside and outside :
a study of Imperialism in the Heart of Darkness” with other books and sources like journals
and dissertation which helps frame an analysis needed to meet our literary purpose as stated
above. The primary sources of information are texts written by Joseph Conrad. For secondary
sources of information the researcher would draw on internet sources, library archives and
history book. The researcher has used textual analysis as the method of the research. The
This research is designed as literary criticism. Peck and Coyle (1993) argue that literary
criticism has been described as reviewing, interpreting, and evaluating literary works. This
doesn‘t mean finding fault with.‘ Literary criticism is the play of mind on the literary work
and in asking and in answering the question (p. 149). The researcher analyzes the novella by

Blackwood and Sons. The data source for this study is an afterword by Maya Jasanoff,
published by Penguin Books in New York in 2017. Data can be presented in the form of
Conrad's background from the article and Zdzislaw Najder's Joseph Conrad: A Life
3. Data collection
To obtain data, researchers collect data using a variety of methods. The first is to read the
novel to understand the main topic being discussed, then read the novel again to gain a deeper
understanding of the main his theme. The third highlights dates related to imperialism and
Joseph Conrad's worldview. So the last way to gather data is to find data on Conrad's
4. Data analysis
Collected data is analyzed in the following steps: The first step is to organize the collected
data to facilitate analysis. We then confirm that the data collected includes Conrad's
worldview on imperialism and imperialism. The next step is processing the collected data.
The fourth step is the analysis of novels and other sources related to Conrad's worldview. In
the fifth step, Conrad's social background is relevant to the novel. After considering Conrad's
social background, the next step is to connect Conrad's social background with Conrad's
worldview to see how Conrad's background influences his worldview. Finally, the final step
is the conclusion.
Literature Review
Heart of Darkness has been studied by several scholars on topics as varied as racism in

appearing in short stories and to analyze the social impact of racism on blacks in Africa. This

findings of this study suggest that racism affects black people who experience violence.

Subsequent research was Yunhenly's Some Biographical and Historical Notes on Dark Hearts
by Joseph Conrad (2011). This study aimed to look at sources related to Conrad's personal
life from his diaries, the opinions of his relatives and friends. On the other hand, historical
records will be drawn from historical reports written about the Congo and from the Congo
when Belgian colonists dominated the Congo. This research is based on Ratna's classification
of biographical and multi-level historical stories. According to his bio, Conrad describes
himself as being like Marlow in a number of ways. Marlow disperses his disapproval, anger,
annoyance, and rage through the retelling of the story. Meanwhile, from a historical point of
view, the researcher points out that the Heart of Darkness was the discovery of the Congo
The third study is Imperialism in Central Africa revealed in Joseph Conrad's Dark Hearts (A
Sociological Approach) by Magfirah, Sumarwati K and Arafah (2015). This study aims to
observe racist ideas conveyed by short story characters and the impact of imperialism in the
Congo. The discovery reveals some of the ideas of racism and imperialism perpetrated by
Belgian colonists in the Congo found in the short story. Also, the Imperialism in the novella

The fourth study is The Imperialism Depicted in Joseph Conrad‘s novel Heart of Darkness
done by Putri (2010). This research aims to find the brutality of the imperialists or the
conquerors toward Africans. This research found that the white‘s cruelty toward the natives

especially in Congo. The researcher concludes that Imperialism is a greedy affair that guided

ideology embedded in Corey Tailor‘s social conditions. The researcher uses genetic
structuralism to categorize the data into human facts, collective subjects, and worldview.
Then, the data are examined according to Taylor‘s social life as he is a member of a specific
community. The next step is to examine the social and historical background of the literary
