CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Mental health illness are spreading specially in today’s time. There are rising rates of
anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and trauma. Nowadays, mostly teenagers are suffering
and experiencing of these mental health illness.

As we can see all people around the world especially to those students that are studying
right now was experiencing mental health illness that can turn to suicidal thoughts. When the
COVID-19 affected our country, we need to lessen the mass gathering . Which is, going to
school is also prohibited. So, the face to face classes changed to modular and online classes.
As the students are studying from their home they are probably stressed to do their housework
and studies simultaneously.

These factors can triggered a students mental health. Some students, from Universal
Scholastic Academe experience this kind of illness. As the students experience this kind of
illness we need a mental health awareness to prevent the progression of this mental health illness.
Mental health awareness is needed to be spread on Universal Scholastic Academe so that
it can educate students about what is mental illness, the causes of this illness  and the process
through which they can deal with it. We need to increase awareness especially on our school
because school are undoubtedly one of the areas where knowledge of mental of a well-being
needs to be high.

Mental health awareness can help a student to prevent having suicidal thoughts. For the
reason that, Mental health illness are the number one cause of suicide. We need to
raise awareness of mental health in our schools to lower the rising suicide rate, we can do this by
discouraging students from taking their own lives away.

Educating students with a healthy outlook and mentality to develop self and emotional
understanding can cope their stress, depression and anxiety.

OBJECTIVES:

This study aims to give knowledge about different objectives such as:
1. To identify and describe all mental health interventions in Universal
Scholastic Academe.
2. Factors that may affect their mental health.
3. Awareness of Students about Mental Health illness.
4. Provides an understanding of how mental health illness can affect a person’s
life.
4.

HYPOTHESIS:
There is relationship between Importance of Mental Health Awareness associated with
depressive symptomatology but this relationship should be mediated by both anxiety and self-
esteem.
5.

SCOPE,LIMITATIONS AND DELIMINATIONS OF THE STUDY:

The study will focus on the Importance of Mental Health Awareness. The
primary subjects of this research study will consist of Grade 11 and Grade
12 students enrolled in academic year 2022-2023 in Universal Scholastic
Academe.

The study will be limited since we were told by our practical research
teacher, Mr. Charlie mar Aguelo, to limit the material we obtain to only
2012 to the present year.

The study delimits the scope of the research because we all know that
mental health is a sensitive subject. We also know that the majority of
people still do not believe that mental illness exists, or should I say, they
still lack knowledge about this particular topic.

To avoid misunderstandings, it is preferable to be more precise.

6.
PEDAGOGILICAL IMPLICATIONS:
The researcher will show the research's educational relevance by
reflecting on research findings during the research as follows:

To Teachers as it gives perception about the Importance of Mental Health

Awareness as Perceived by Students of Universal Scholastic Academe and
for providing the knowledge of understanding of how mental health affects
the students.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
According to Salerno, MPH (2016), stigmatizing views about mental
illness and a lack of mental health literacy have been identified as
barriers to teenagers getting care for mental health difficulties.
Prior research has shown that school-based mental health
interventions can help improve these outcomes. The goal of this
study was to look at the empirical literature on universal mental
health interventions for children in US K-12 schools, with a focus on
health inequities in vulnerable populations.

A study by Sutherland (2018), an adolescent's time in school is about

more than just academics; it's also about social, physical, and
emotional development. Prior study has found a link between poor
academic performance and a student's need for emotional and
mental health help.

According to School Mental Health (2014), after advancing a

multidimensional conceptualization of academic success at the levels
of individual students and schools, we summarize observational and
intervention studies that connect students’ mental health to their
academic achievement, with acknowledgment of the bidirectional
relationship.
: Stigmatizing attitudes toward mental illness and low mental health
literacy have been identified as links to social adversity, and barriers to
seeking and adhering to treatment among adolescents suffering from
mental illness. Prior research has found that it is possible to improve
these outcomes using school-based mental health awareness
interventions. The purpose of this study was to review empirical
literature pertaining to universal mental health awareness interventions
aiming to improve mental health related outcomes among students
enrolled in US K12 schools, especially minorities vulnerable to health
disparities. Methods: PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, PUBMED, and
reference lists of relevant articles were searched for K-12 school-based
mental health awareness interventions in the United States. Universal
studies that measured knowledge, attitudes, and/or help-seeking
pertinent to mental health were included. Results: A total of 15 studies
were selected to be part of the review. There were 7 pretest/post-test
case series, 5 nonrandomized experimental trial, 1 Solomon 4-groups,
and 2 randomized controlled trial (RCT) designs. Nine studies
measuring knowledge, 8 studies measuring attitudes, and 4 studies
measuring help-seeking, indicated statistically significant improvements.
Conclusions: Although results of all studies indicated some level of
improvement, more research on implementation of universal school-
based mental health awareness programs is needed using RCT study
designs, and long-term follow-up.
This study sought to develop a greater understanding of what young
people identify as essential components of mental health support.
Rationale: Children and young people's mental health has been identified
as an area of concern and highlighted by the government as a priority
area for improvement. In the UK increased importance has been placed
on capturing their views. However, research suggests this group is not
always asked for their views by decision-makers, which has led to a
discrepancy between what is provided and what children and young
people want from support. Incorporating the views and perspectives of
children and young people in the design of appropriate support
approaches is an important way to give them a voice in issues that affect
them, as well as ensuring provision is suitable. Methods: A two-round
Delphi method was used whereby a panel of young people aged 16-25
who had previously experienced a mental health difficulty rated a series
of statements. A consensus level of 75 per cent across the panel was set
to include/exclude statements in a final framework of recommendations.
To gain feedback on the feasibility and utility of the framework,
interviews with adult stakeholders were carried out. Findings: The
competencies identified were used to form a framework of
recommendations for practice. The importance of relationships, the need
for trust and confidentiality, and the need for further mental health
awareness and training were key themes identified. Conclusions: This
study provides a helpful insight into what young people value from
mental health support. Implications of the research include a need for
further awareness raising of children and young people's views regarding
mental health and larger scale participatory research to expand upon the
findings of the current study

To explore barriers and facilitators in implementing an educational

campaign in mental health for the public in Qatar. Design: Qualitative
study. Setting: Healthcare facilities across Qatar were used as the
setting. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35
healthcare providers from a variety of professions, including physicians,
pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, psychologists and administrators.
Results: Findings indicate that these healthcare providers support the
concept of public mental health education but feel that several factors
need to be considered before any educational campaign is undertaken. A
public mental health education campaign should target improving the
public's mental health literacy as well as describing appropriate
pathways to mental health care. Health care providers believe such
educational campaigns should be started in schools so that mental health
awareness can have a positive influence from a young age. The social
media were viewed as a suitable platform to deliver positive messages
relating to mental health to the public. Any educational campaign in
mental health should consider the cultural context with which it is being
delivered. In conclusion, healthcare providers appeared to have similar
views on the importance of public mental health education but differed
in their opinions of the challenges faced. Conclusion: Consideration of
the message intended and how it is delivered should be addressed as part
of a successful public mental health educational campaign.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This research was based on the World Health Organization.
Subjective well-being, self-efficacy, autonomy, capacity,
intergenerational reliance, and intellectual or emotional potential are all
considered mental health. There will be a reduction in subjective well-
being and other negative feelings (such as fear, nervousness, loneliness,
and despair), as well as symptoms of mental distress (such as anxiety,
depression, and stress) when there is a problem with mental health
(Hossain et al., 2020). Mental health difficulties are public health issues
that are frequently influenced by factors such as financial hardship,
school problems, family problems.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK AND HYPHOTESIS
The conceptual framework will serve as a framework of reference for
the facilitation of a process of engagement by the Importance of Mental
Health Awareness as Perceived by the Students of Universal Scholastic
Academe. The mental health of the students will be promoted through
the process of engagement on a deeper emotional level, the researcher
will mobilise resources in their internal and external environments. The
mental health of these students will also be promoted as they will start a
journey towards self-discovery.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURE
Research Design:
In this study, used a survey to access the needed information and
documents for the social status of every students in UNIVERSAL
SCHOLASTIC ACADEME for their experience in the mental health of
each students due to pandemics. It includes the importance of mental
health awareness as perceived of USAIANS. Descriptive research is a
purposive process that analyze, gathered information, practices, beliefs,
trends and cause and effects of a certain relationships. It pertains an
accurate interpretation about a data with or without statistical
research/survey.
SUBJECTS OF THE STUDY
The respondents of this study came from the students in
UNIVERSAL SCHOLASTIC ACADEME(USA).It selected randomly
from different sections of Grade 11 and Grade 12 of SHS.
DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT
The main instrument that we used to gather information is
questionnaires, that we planned to create in google forms. We used this
method since it will be more convenient for us and for the respondents
as well.
QUESTIONNAIRE
The main instrument used in gathering data was the researcher found
questionnaire on the internet on the same research study.
Construction the researcher will collect data on primary resources ,and
primary data . This Research will use MS excel for descriptive
analysis .The quantitative data collection techniques will be followed to
analyzed from respondents.
Validation the researcher formulated the first drop of the questionnaire
with the guidance of Practical Research teacher.
Administration the researcher will seek for the approval of Practical
Research teacher, adviser ,principal and administrator of Universal
Scholastic Academe. After approval the adviser will approach to the
Senior High students of Universal Scholastic Academe to answer the
questionnaires.
Scoring of responses the data obtained from the questionnaire will be
tallied and tabulated for interpretation.
Option Scale Range Verbal Interpretation
4 3.50-4.00 strongly agree
3 2.50-3.49 agree
2 1.50-2.49 disagree
1 1.00-1.49 strongly disagree
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
Because conducting research has become more difficult as a result of
the pandemic, we used Google Forms to make it easier for respondents
to complete the questionnaire.
We made all of our group members contribute questions to be answered
by the respondents.
STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
For the clarity and understanding of the gathered data ,the statistical
tools applied will be the weighted mean and chi-square correlation.
Weighted mean to determine the assessment of
learners towards the different variable considered. The formula used was
:
Where:
X=weighted mean
Y=frequency point in each option
ZX= sum of the products of frequency and weighted point.
N=total number of respondents
Chi square this was applied to determine if there is a significant
relationship between variables considered in the study.
