Decatur

The Hit Sounds Of The 1980’s

I.Installation Instructions
Download the installation Zip file (Decatur.zip) from our website and place it in the location where you
would normally install other virtual instruments or plugins (i.e. C:/Progam Files/Mydownloads/Decatur).
Unzip the file using any zipping method (WinZip, WinRAR, etc.) to your chosen folder. Once the file is
unzipped a folder named “Decatur” will appear, which contains all the necessary files (documents,
instruments, samples) for the instrument to work.

In Kontakt, the special Library’s tab does not support open-file format libraries such as Decatur, therefore
you will not be able to see the software on the Library’s tab. This does not affect the performance of the
instrument in any way and the instrument can still be accessed through the file tab.

Open up Kontakt 5.5 or above in solo mode or inside any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) such as
Ableton, ProTools, Cubase, Fruity Loops, Logic, etc. In Kontakt, go to the top right-hand corner and click
on the “Files” tab (if you cannot see the “files” tab you may have to click on the “view” bottom at the top
right-hand corner of Kontakt). Browse through the files and look for the folder where your Decatur was
placed earlier. Click on the Decatur folder, then click on the “Instruments” folder. Inside of the
“Instruments” folder you will see a list of 8 other folders. These 8 folders contain the preset sounds or
instruments needed to get working with Decatur. Click on one of the instrument folders and you will
notice that the names of the instruments inside that folder appear on the box underneath as .nki files.

To download an instrument just simply drag the instrument’s .nki file right onto Kontakt’s stage or
screen and that is it. The instrument selected will quickly download and now is ready to use.
To switch instruments simply drag another instrument to the stage area on top of the last one. If you
have made any changes to the previous instrument a window will prompt you to save any changes made
so far to the instrument.

A word of caution: If you make any changes to the instrument and would like to save the new changes
we suggest that you save the changes under a new name. Otherwise the original sound and settings of
the instrument will be lost. In order to get the original preset back you would have to go back to the
original Decatur unzipped folder and copy and paste the instrument in question (you must copy/paste
the instrument along with its sample folder for it to work properly).

II. INTRO
Decatur – The Hit Sounds Of The 1980’s

What is Decatur?
Decatur is a sampled based Kontakt library highlighting the synth sounds of the most influential bands
and artists throughout the 1980's. These classic sounds which were featured in countless radio hits
dominated the airwaves for decades and have without a doubt, become a staple of musical nostalgia
over the years. All of these sounds are now available, for the first time, in one library!

Who is Decatur for?

It would be nearly impossible for anyone to play through Decatur's sound library and not reminisce
about perhaps an era when music was not only original and experimental but also groundbreaking in the
arena of sound design and textural soundscapes. Most of the music of that era felt like it was at the
frontier of new musical beginnings and hopefully, this collection will inspire that same caliber of
experimentation in all of us.

With that statement in mind, Decatur is aimed at anyone and everyone who is searching for not only
legendary sounds but also new ideas to create and experiment in their projects. Keyboard and Synth
players who are weekend musical warriors will be more than satisfied to play through the huge list of
presets from some of their favorite artists. Composers who love to add a tinge of retro sound to their
arsenal will also find this curated library an invaluable asset.

"Not everyone who plays keyboards wants to sit down and figure out how to
program a particular sound they have heard before."
- Frank Perez
Sound Designer

What is special about Decatur?

There have been numerous hardware and software emulators over the years aimed at the retro sounds
of the aforementioned decade to great success. However, those products only focus on a few classic
sounds and the rest is up to us to figure out. Not everyone who plays keyboards wants to sit down and
figure out how to program a particular sound they have heard. Furthermore, when sound engineers
program classic retro patches they usually label the preset based on the machine or synth that created it
which is informational, to say the least, but unfortunately leaves out the vast majority of musicians who
can only relate to a sound if a musical reference about that sound is given.

One of the main goals while designing Decatur has been to let musicians know exactly what sounds they
have at their fingertips by labeling these patches with relatable information and names. Also, most retro
sound libraries focus on rock music with some pop influences. Decatur's sound library goes far beyond
the rock and pop spectrum by also including a great collection of dance music classic sounds. Last but
not least, Decatur also contains numerous signature sounds that are literally not found anywhere else
whether as part of a sound library or as an emulator.

What type of classic sounds are available with Decatur?
Decatur's curated collection of presets in no particular order include sounds heard in the albums of
artists such as Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Phil Collins, Ozzy Osbourne,
Toto, Journey, Bon Jovi, Eurythmics, Steve Miller, Debbie Deb, Information Society, Michael Jackson,
Yazoo, Lipps Inc, Steve Perry, Howard Jones, Van Halen, Animotion, Prince, Simple Minds, Depeche
Mode, Genesis, Dire Straits, Janet Jackson, Paul Young, Harold Fatremeyer, Rockwell, Heart, Cutting
Crew, A-ha, Will To Power, Men Without Hats, Tears For Fears, The Cars, Berlin, Mr. Mister, The Human
League, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Manheim Steamroller, Spandau Ballet, Europe, ELP, Gary Numan, Pink
Floyd, Santana, Chicago, Nena, Foreigner and many more…

Who created Decatur?

This curated sound library was meticulously created by sound designer and synth programmer Frank
Perez at Almalibre Studios (almalibrestudios.com). All of these sounds were designed from scratch using
a combination of hardware and software emulators to accurately recreate these legendary musical
moments in time.

Decatur is divided into 8 categories:

Arps – This is a collection of famous arpeggiated sounds heard in some of the classic hits.

Bass – It’s all about the Synth Bass in this section. These synth bass patches are samples from legendary
synths known for their bass sounds such as the MiniMoog, the Prophet V, Roland’s TB-303 as well as
others.

Brass – Analog brass at it’s best as well as some FM Brass such as the sounds of the Yamaha DX7,
Oberheim and Prophet 5. This section includes multi-layered brass samples for complex brass sounds
such as those heard on Prince and Toto albums.

Keys – This library includes samples that would not necessarily fit into the Leads category, the Piano
category or the Pads category. In some cases, the samples are a combination of all of the above.

Leads – This is the largest collection of synth leads available in Decatur. The leads were sampled from
vintage machines as well as modern emulators and some of the best virtual synths available today. From
the quirky analog lead sound of Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown” to the fat brass synth used by Keith Emerson
during “Touch & Go”, this library will keep you busy for a while.

Organs – Here you can find mostly Hammond Organ B-3 patches and a couple of classic organ patches
provided by Yamaha DX7 and Korg M1.

Pads – The Pads section contains one of Decatur’s largest libraries which includes the legendary pad
sounds of synthesizer behemoths like the Oberheim OB-8, Roland’s Jupiter 8 and Sequential Circuits
Prophet among others.

Pianos – This section focuses mainly on DX Electric pianos similar to those from the famous Yamaha DX7
Synthesizer released in 1983, as well as a Fender Rhodes piano and a few layered acoustic pianos.

III.Sound Editing in Decatur
Filter Envelopes
Decatur’s editing tools combine an ADSR Amp (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) as well as an ADSR Filter
which affects the signal of the first ADSR. There is also a Low Pass Cutoff filter, a Resonance filter and
also a Filter Amount knob which regulates the amount of filtering added to the ADSR’s amp signal.
Attack – The time required for the envelope to go from 0 to its maximum level.
Decay – The time required for the envelope to descend from its maximum level to the sustain level.
Sustain – The level that will be maintained as long as the MIDI note triggering the envelope is held.
Release – Upon releasing the MIDI note, this parameter determines the time for the envelope to decay
down to 0 from the sustain level.

LFOs
An LFO or Low Frequency Oscillator is an electronic signal which creates a rhythmic pulse or sweep. This
signal is usually below 20hz. LFO’s come in different shapes such as Sine, Triangle, Saw and Square.
Decatur’s LFO’s are attached to a Sine wave by default. However, you can go into “Instrument” mode by
clicking on the wrench icon on the top left-hand corner of Kontakt and scroll to the very bottom. There
you will see a “multi” panel where you can choose to switch from Sine to Square, Triangle, Saw, etc. You
will not be able to control this LFO from the front Interface however. For more info on how to edit
Kontakt from the Instrument Mode Panel please read the Native Instruments Kontakt Manual. There are
2 LFO racks in Decatur. LFO 1 allows you to tweak the Amount, Frequency, Rate and Intensity of the
signal while LFO 2 allows you to tweak the Filter, Stereo Pan, Pitch and LFO Delay (add a fade in before
the LFO takes effect).

Effects
Reverb FX – Control the Amount, Size, Damping and Pre-Delay
Delay FX – Control the Amount, Rate, Feedback and Stereo Pan
Chorus FX – Control the Amount, Depth, Phase and Speed
Phase FX – Control the Amount, Depth, Phase and Speed

*All time-based effects such as LFO’s as well as Delay FX’s are sync to the master tempo on your DAW
(Digital Audio Workstation) or sequencer.

IV.Software Specifications
Decatur runs on Kontakt 5.5 and above. A full version of Kontakt 5.5 is necessary for Decatur to work
properly. You can still use Decatur with a demo version of Kontakt but there will be a pause every 15
minutes. A free version of Kontakt’s reader will not work since these are open-format Kontakt libraries
which are not supported by Native Instruments. Decatur runs on PC as well as Mac OS systems.
You will need a computer running Windows 7 or above or a Mac running OSX and above with at least
2gb of Ram and at least 12gb of space to store all the samples.

Copyright Infringement Disclaimer

In the past, when sound engineers have programmed classic retro patches they usually label the preset
based on the machine or synth that created it which is informational, to say the least, but not very
helpful to the vast majority of musicians who can mostly relate to a sound only if a musical reference
about that sound is given. One of the main goals while designing Decatur has been to let musicians
know exactly what sounds they have at their fingertips by labeling these patches with relatable
information and names. Therefore, it is not the intention of the sound designer, programmer, producer
or Almalibrestudios.com to commit any copyright infringement while labeling these sounds with the
names of the original artists and songs. This was simply done as a reference point for the users of
Decatur to understand what songs these sounds originated from.
