ANALYTICAL REASONING & PUZZLES
In this test, the question are put in the form of puzzles involving certain number of items may it be things or persons.
The candidate is required to study the information carefully and answer the questions.

Number Test
Here, a series of numbers is given. From this series, the candidate is asked to find out or pick out a number (or the
times of its occurrence) pertaining to certain specified conditions.

Ranking Test
Here, the ranks of a person (or an object) are mentioned from both top and bottom or from left and right. The
candidate, then may be asked to calculate the total number of persons (or objects) based upon the given ranks.

As you know, a number which comes after a given number is said to follow it while the one which
comes before the given number precedes it.
Thus, the numbers satisfying the given conditions, can be shown as follows:

Illustration-2: How many even numbers are there in the following sequence of numbers which are
immediately followed by an odd number as well as immediately preceded by an even number

Solution: D
As you know, numbers divisible by 2 are called even while those not divisible by 2 are called odd
numbers.
Thus, the numbers satisfying the given condition, can be shown as follows:

Illustration-5: Rahul ranked ninth from the top and thirty eighth from the bottom in a class. How many
students are there in the class?

Solution: B
Clearly, the whole class consists of
(i) 8 students who have a rank higher than Rahul;
(ii) Rahul; and
(iii) 37 students who have rank lower than Rahul
i.e., (8 + 1 + 37) = 46 students.

Illustration-6: In a row of 21 girls, when Monika was shifted by four places towards the right, she became
12th from the left end. What was her earlier position from the right end of the row ?
(A) 9th (B) 10th (C) 11th (D) 14th
Solution: D
The change of place by Monika can be shown as number:

Clearly, Monika’s earlier position was 8th from the left end and 14th from the right end.

Illustration-7: In a row of boys, Deepak is seventh from the left and Madhu is twelfth from the right. If they
interchange their position, Deepak becomes twenty-second from the left. How many boys
are there in the row?
(A) 19 (B) 31 (C) 33 (D) cannot be determined.
Solution: C
Deepak’s new position is 22nd from left. But it is the same as Madhu’s earlier position which is 12th
from the right.
Thus, the row consists of (21 + 1 + 11) = 33 boys.

Illustration-8: A bus for Delhi leaves every thirty minutes from a bus stand. An enquiry clerk told a
passenger that the bus had already left ten minutes ago and the next bus will leave at 9.35
a.m. At what time did the enquiry clerk given this information to the passenger?
(A) 9.10 a.m (B) 8.55 a.m (C) 9.08 p.m (D) 9.15 a.m
Solution: D
The next bus will leave at 9.35 a.m. This means that the previous bus had left at
9.05 a.m. But it happened ten minutes before the clerk gave the information to the passenger.

Illustration-9: In the following series of numbers, find out how many times 1, 3 and 7 have appeared
together, 7 being in the middle and 1 and 3 on either side of 7.

Illustration-10: In a class of 60, the number of girls are twice that of boys. Kamal ranked seventeenth from
the top. If there are nine girls ahead of Kamal, how many boys are after him in rank?

Solution: C
Clearly, there are 20 boys and 40 girls.
Number of students behind Kamal in rank = 60 – 17 = 43
Number of girls ahead of Kamal in rank = 9
Number of girls behind of Kamal in rank = 40 – 9 = 31
Number of boys behind Kamal in rank = 43 – 31 = 12

Illustration-11: What is the smallest number of ducks that could swim in this formation?
“Two ducks in front of a duck, two ducks behind a duck and a duck between two ducks”
Solution: The smallest such number of ducks is 3 which are arranged as shown along side.

Illustration-12: Ramesh tells his son Ramswaroop, “I was of your present age when you were born”. If
Ramesh is 46 now, how old was the boy 5 years back.
Solution: Say, the Ramesh was ‘x’ years of age when his son Ramswaroop was born. When his son is ‘x’
years old, obviously, Ramesh is ‘2x’ years old. Ramesh is 46 years of age now so son’s present age
is 23 and so he was 18 years of age 5 years back.

Illustration-13: Four girls are sitting on a bench to be photographed. Ravali is to the left of Ramani. Manju is
to the right of Ramani. Rita is between Ramani and Manju. Who would be second from the
left in the photograph?
Solution: Ravali is to the left of Ramani and Manju. So, the order is Ravali – Ramani – Rita – Manju. In the
photograph, Rita will be the second from right.

Illustration-14: Ashish is heavier than Govind. Mohit is lighter than Jack. Pawan is heavier than Jack but
lighter than Govind. Who among them is the heaviest?
Solution: In terms of weight:
Govind < Ashish; Mohit < Jack; Jack < Pawan and Pawan < Govind
 the sequence is Mohit < Jack < Pawan < Govind < Ashish
 Ashish is the heaviest

Illustration-15: Swaroop cuts a cake into two halves and cut one-half into smaller pieces of equal size. Each
of the small pieces is twenty five grams in weight. If he has eleven pieces of the cake in all
with him, how heavy was the original cake?
Solution: Eleven pieces consist with ten small pieces of weight 25 grams each = 25 x 10g i.e. 250 grams

 Total weight of the cake = 2 x 250 grams i.e 500 grams.

Directions (16 – 20): Read the following information carefully and answer the questions given below:
(i) A, B, C, D, E, F and G are sitting around a circle and are facing the centre.
(ii) G is second to the left of C, who is the immediate left of F.
(iii) A is third to the left of E.

Solutions: We first of all mark the seven blank positions around a circle.
Now, G is second to the left of C and C is to the immediate left of F.
We mark their positions as shown.
Also, B is between D and E. Thus, D, B, E sit together and occupy the three consecutive blank
positions. Now, only one position remains blank between G and C, and this must be occupied by A.
Now, D, B, E may sit in any of the positions (D, B, E) or (E, B, D). But A is third to the left of E only
when they sit in the order (D, B, E). Thus we mark their positions as shown.

Clearly, only in the pair DG, the first person D sits to the immediate left to the second person G.
Hence, the answer is (D).
