i. The Manipulated Media of North Korean Government

North Korea is a secretive, suppressive, and manipulative type of government. They have
been a country that is considered as closed society in the world and it is hard for people outside
to know what happens inside. With these characteristics, the North Korean government is strictly
controlling its media coverage as well. The amount of information to be released to the public in
different media outlets are controlled and monitored by the authorities. According to Catherine
Coder (2015), the North Korean media is being strictly controlled by the totalitarian government
where flow of information in and out of the country is restricted. The media is being restricted in
order for the North Korean government to control what the media shows to its citizens and
confuse the international audience. Therefore, it is seen as being biased because there are no
checks and balances happening in the media where citizens rely on information in the whole
country.

The use of internet in North Korea is also being forbidden and controlled by the
government. Based on the data presented by on the 2018 Digital Report that were conducted by
British and Canadian NGOs, it says that North Korea only uses about 1,000 IP addresses in 2018
and are strictly used for diplomacy and training purposes only. It proves that media and mobile
media in North Korea is being controlled by the government by limiting and forbidding them to
use such services.

The North Korean media’s theme has always been “threat” from United States and other
nations (Coder, 2015). This is a method they use in order to manipulate the minds of North
Koreans by instilling negative connotations against the United States and eventually justifies
their actions in the government. Unfavorable media contents towards the government in
unacceptable and filtered while the actions of the United States are strictly monitored in their
media.
