Lesson 1- SCIENCE and its

Branches
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• At the end of the lesson, the students should
be able to:
1. Describe Science and explain its importance
2. Enumerate and explain the different
branches of Science
3. Appreciate the contributions of Science to
modern life
SCIENCE

• It is a systematic body of knowledge based on

careful observation and experimentation.
Branches of Science
• SOCIAL SCIENCE
• It is the study of relationships among people
and their society.
• NATURAL SCIENCE
• It seeks to understand the different processes
of the natural and physical world.
a. APPLIED SCIENCE
• It aims to discover facts or knowledge to
solve a particular problem.
b. PURE SCIENCE
• It is used to gain innovative knowledge.
1. Biology
• It refers to the study of living things.
a. Botany - is the study of plants.
b. Zoology- is the study of animals.
• PHYSICAL SCIENCE
It refers to the study of non-living things of
physical quantities.
a. Chemistry
It is the study of the properties, composition,
and structure of matter.
• MATTER
It refers to anything that occupies space and
has mass.
A. PURE SUBSTANCE- is composed of a particle
1. Element- it refers to the simplest form of
pure substance. Ex. Oxygen
2. Compound- it refers to the combination of
two (2) or more elements. Ex. H2O- water
B. MIXTURE- is composed of two(2) or more
pure substances.
1. Homogeneous mixture- it refers to combined
substances which are in the same phase.
Ex. Alcohol and water
2. Heterogeneous mixture- it refers to combined
substances which are in the different phase.
Ex. Oil and water
• PHYSICS
It is the study of interaction between matter
and energy.
a. Classic Physics- deals with macroscopic
objects.
1. Wave- refers to light and sound waves.
2. Mechanics- refers to any object in motion.
Ex. Speed of car
3. Thermodynamics- deals with heat in motion.
“Thermo”- means heat
“Dynamics”- means motion
Ex. Electric fan
4. Electromagnetism- refers to application of
electricity and magnet. Ex. LRT
b. Modern Physics- deals with microscopic
objects which refer to atoms and sub-atomic
atom.
• EARTH SCIENCE
The study of the planet Earth.
a. Geology- the study of Earth’s land.
b. Hydrosphere- the study of Earth’s water.
c. Atmosphere- the study of Earth’s
atmosphere.
d. Astronomy- it is the study of the universe.
