Part I. Analysis

1. Analyze this minuet by Haydn. First listen to the piece, then perform a Roman Numeral analysis
and label cadences. Is this Rounded or Simple Binary Form? Identify Sections (A, B, etc.), Phrases
(slur), Ideas (brackets), and Motives (x, y, etc.).

2. What type of formal structure are measures 1–8, sentence or period? Write your reasoning in a
couple of sentences using terminology discussed in class.

3. Use your analysis to write about something interesting you noticed about the use of motives in
the piece. Write your response using terminology and specific measure numbers.

Part III. Composition

1. Compose a Sentence in the blank grand staff below.


2. You can choose your own key and meter.
3. Make the first two measures a basic idea. Measure 1 should be tonic (I) harmony and
measure 2 should be dominant (V). Use motive x in measure 1 and motive y in measure 2.
4. Use the same motives in measures 3–4 but use dominant (V) harmony in measure 3 and
tonic (I) harmony in measure 4.
5. Choose either motive x or y and use it in measure 5 on a I6 chord.
6. Choose either motive x or y and use it in measure 6 on a ii65 chord.
7. Liquidate the motives and use any rhythms you want to cadence in the last two measures.
Measure 7 should be a cadential 6/4 (V64 53), and measure 8 should be I.
8. End it with a PAC.
