MUSIC IN THE LOWLANDS of LUZON
FOLK SONGS
These are the traditional songs that appeal to the heart of the listeners
mainly because of their usual simplicity. Folk songs have the following
features.
1. Folk songs reveal the culture of a society.
2. They are learned through imitation and memorization, and not
through printed notation.
3. They have no original text
4. They are performed during various events.

SACRED MUSIC
This is music used in religious setting or music that is influenced
by religion. The following are considered kinds of sacred music.
1. Liturgical music- music for prayer and praise offered to
God.
2. Non-liturgical music- based on religious subjects.
3. Devotional music – worship to God, celebrations and ritual.

SECULAR MUSIC
Secular means “not overtly or specifically religious”. Even with the
flourishing of secular music containing Western elements, traditional
secular music is still performed in the region.
1. Harana- (or serenade) is a vocal or instrumental music
traditionally performed by a man courting a woman.

2. Polka- The Spaniards brought polka to the Philippines.
(Ballroom dance), it is mostly performed during fiestas.

3. Kumintang – Style in singing originated in Batangas,
formerly a war song but became a song of love in the 19th
Century. It is also narrative of hatred, bitterness, social
commentary.

ART MUSIC
Kundiman, which contraction of “Kung hindi man” is an art
song. “Expressive love song is an artistic blend of poetry and
music written in triple meter. It has a beautiful melody that
may express regret for unrequited loved, request for pity,
farewell after being forsaken, or a promise of true and sincere
love. It can be also love in a nation, “Bayan Ko”.
