CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIGENOUS
MUSIC IN THE PHILIPPINES

Ballad – Is traditionally a song that narrates an
event in a community. In modern times, ballad has
been applied to describe love songs, and a
balladeer is an artist who set of songs are
primarily romantic songs
Choral – Is a musical composition intended to be
performed by a group of singers, called a choir
Opera – is a combination of both music and
theater. It is a sung drama that entails
collaborative efforts of singers, dancers,
composers, choreographers.
Pop Music- is used to describe music that is readily
available to broad populace. It is an umbrella term
that encompasses a multitude of different genre of
music, such as RnB, Rap, Rock, Hiphop, Dance,
etc.
Protest Songs- are songs that bring to light
injustices and inequality
DANCE
• Very popular in the Philippines.
• It is a way to bond
• it is quite diverse (Indigenous Dances)
• It can reflect the group’s values and beliefs
• Early Colonizers- War dance, polka, ballroom
dance.
• Contemporary Dance (West colonies)
• Mambo, tango, samba and cha-cha.
• 20th century – European Classical Ballet
AEROBIC DANCE
• Dance routine that are exercise
program (pop music)
• Three Parts: warm-up, aerobic
dance, cooldown exercises.
• Variation of aerobic dance:
Jazzercise, aero hip-hop,
ballroom dancing, belly
dancing and Zumba.
BALLET
• It is both dance and theater art.
Style and dance technique that
follows strict set of moves and
performance.
• Originated from Europe
• Contemporary Reiterations
ballet form: modern ballet,
opera ballet, and folkloric ballet.
Modern Ballet
• uses traditional ballet techniques and
styles (contemporary ideas and subjects)
• It can be presented outdoors and in
other unconventional venues.

harvesting)
