Filipino Artists of MUSIC
Antonino R. Buenaventura
(1935) National artist for DANCE, together with FRANCISCA REYES
AQUINO research on and popularized PHILIPPINE FOLK SONGS
and DANCES.

His works included several marches and symphonic and orchestral


music composition.

TRIUMPHAL MARCH, ECHOES OF THE PAST, SECOND
SYMPHONY IN E- FLAT, ODE OF FREEDOM AND ECHOES)
ORCHESTRAL MUSIC COMPOSITION ( PRELUDE AND
FUGUE IN G MINOR, PHILIPPINE TRIUMPHANT, SYMPHONY
IN C MAJOR, MINDANAO SKETCHES, AND CONCERT
OVERTURE.
JOSE MACEDA

Popularized FILIPINO TRADITIONAL MUSIC. Conducted


researches in understanding and appreciation of the ethnic and
traditional music of the Philippines locally and internationally.

Works: UGMA- UGMA, PAGSAMBA, UDLOT UDLOT,


KUBING, AGUNGAN, UGNAYAN, ARODING ADING,
SIASID AND SULING SULING.
LUCRESIA R. KASILAG
Reinforces the Filipino’s appreciation to music by fusing Western
influences to Philippine ethnic music.
Integrates ETHNIC INSTRUMENTS in her orchestral productions.

ERNANI J. CUENCO
Remarkable singer, compose, film scorer, and musician.
He incorporates KUNDIMAN elements in ballad love
songs and been used as theme songs and musical scores
for numerous Filipino movies.

LUCIO SAN PEDRO
Master composer known for creatively using folk idioms in his
musical compositions.
*Extracted the Filipino essence and style from the folk materials
and used them in his compositions. Produced numerous works
like songs, orchestral compositions, chamber music and cantatas.

EASTERN CANTATA, SA MAHAL KONG BAYAN,orchestral
works: THE DEVIL BRIDGE, MALAKAS AT MAGANDA

CONDUCTED 3 bands namely: PENG KONG GRAND MASON
ANTONIO J. MOLINA
Innovated Philippine music in his time by using folk
instruments like KULINTANGAN AND GABBANG and
used folk music to his works.
He composed 300 works and two thirds (2/3) of which used
traditional music.

SANTOS
“Music highlights Asia’s and Philippines” rich artistic
tradition and features elements from western and non
western.
He combines Philippine indigenous instruments and vocal
to orchestral instruments from foreign nations like
JAVANESE GAMELAN.
He composed works that interweaved Asian culture,
drama, poetry, and dance like SANDIWAAN,
DRAGANG MAGAYON, TA-O, AWIT NI PULAU.
KULINTANG- his popular unique composition.

FUENTES
Remarkble Filipina artist known for her PORTRAYALS of
Cio-cio san in Madame Butterfly by Giacceomo Puccini.
Spain awarded her as the “EMBAHADORA DE
FILIPINAS A SU MADRE PATRIA” for portraying
musical roles and performance in EUROPE.
Known for her exceptional voice and the founder of
“ARTISTS’ GUILD OF THE PHILIPPINES” and produced
“TOUR OF OPERALAN”.

LEON
He is the “PEOPLE MUSICIAN” for the sentiments
and aspirations of the Filipino people in time of war
and peace are evident in his musical works.
He Filipinized version of western music.

ANDREA VENERACION

Played a significant part in the development of the Philippine


choral music. She was the founder of the WORLD-
RENOWNED CHORAL GROUP, the PHILIPPINE
MADRIGAL SINGERS. She won numerous awards in and
outside country.

FRANCISCA REYES AQUINO
(1920) She is the “FOLK DANCE PIONEER” of the
country.
Her research entitled “ PHILIPPINE DANCES AND
GAMES” contains the country’s unrecorded
celebrations, folk dances, rituals, and games.
(1940)She serve the Bureau of Education and distributed
her work for teaching of folk dances in school as a mean
to promote our cultural heritage to Filipino students.
RAMON OBUSAN
Promoted the PHILIPPINE ETHNIC DANCES and
performed them with respect and authenticity.
Research on the different philippine ethnic groups to perfectly
perform their dances and attempts to demonstrate the ethnic
dances original routine and music.
His RAMON OBUSAN FOLKLORIC GROUP inspired
many Filipinos to embrace the Filipino culture.

ALICE REYES
Major and most significant contribution in the Philippine dance
is the development of unique FILIPINO MODERN DANCE
IDIOM
INTERWEAVED Philippine ethnic dance, modern dance and
ballet producing one of a kind contemporary dance routine.
She popularized it trough concerts, tours outreach programs
and lecture- demonstrations in schools.

REMEMBERED, RAMA HARI, AND AT A MARANAW
GATHERING
LEONOR OROSA GOQUINGCO
Known as the “TRAILBLAZER”, MOTHER OF
PHILIPPINE THEATER DANCE, AND DEAN OF
FILIPINO PEROFORMING ARTS CRITICS and
significantly contributed to the progress of the Philippine
dance by developing distinct productions using balletic
folkloric and Asian styles for over 50 years.
WORKS: FILIPINESCAS: PHILPPINE LIFE,
LEGEND AND LORE a dance epic showing the
Filipino culture from pagan time to present.
LUCRESIA REYES-
URTULA
Studied the country's’ folk and ethnic dances for
4 decades and developed ethnic choreographies
applying her findings.
She was a dance director of BAYANIHAN
PHILIPPINE DANCE COMPANY for 3 decades.
