2. Research an article or a research study in Barriers of engaging physical activity

involvement look for the following content
Research Article Title : Physical Activity Barriers and Facilitators among working
Mothers and Fathers
Researchers: Emily Mailey, Jennifer Huberty, Danae Dinkel & Edward McAuley
Date Published: June 27, 2014

1.1. What is the problem in the study.

This study was assigned to qualitatively investigates various perceptions and the
declines in engaging physical activities among working parents.

1.2. What are the common indicators or factors affecting physical

engagement.
There are four emerged major themes as barriers included family responsibilities,
guilt, lack of support, and work. As they face the state of being parents both priorities and
responsibilities had shifted to focus on family while those who were fitting in physical
activity had developed strategies that allowed them handle and balance their household
and occupational responsibilities.

1.3. On the factors mentioned what are the common factors that influence
most.
According to this article, all of those mentioned above are the most influential factors
included family responsibilities, guilt, lack of support, and work that have affected both
mothers and fathers in their physical activity involvement.

1.4. Explain the results

Themes related to barriers included family responsibilities (e.g., having children, no
childcare), guilt (e.g., family-related, self-related, work-related), lack of support (e.g.,
spouse, community, role models), and work. Family Responsibilities, fathers and mothers
stated that having children was one of the major barrier where they have to adjust or
change on their routines just to fulfill the role or duties of being a parent. For instance,
every morning, the first thing they need to do is to check their children, to prepare the kids
for school, as well as, guiding teaching them. They also said that being a parent is not easy
since all day long they have to take care of their kids, day and night which a certain reason
why mostly parents do not have time to be engaged to various physical activities due to
responsibilities. Guilt, considered as barrier for both fathers and mothers in terms of family,
taking care of themselves, and also, work. For instance, father might feel guilty if he go
work out alone while his wife is busy taking care of their child, and as a barrier, it could
hinder the father to exercise because of guilt. There is a feeling of guilt that people cannot
avoid, especially for your love ones. That we should also give much time attention to them.
Lack of Support, both fathers and mothers reported that not having support was also a
barrier. Fathers tends to have community of others with whom they could play with. For
example, some of his friends will ask him to play basketball with them. Just like my father,
he do not want to play alone, like no one will ask him especially without the companion of
his friends. While mothers specifically mentioned their husbands’ lack of support being a
barrier to their participation in activity However, this was mostly due to fathers wanting to
exercise and not supporting their wives when they wanted to exercise. Work, parents’
duties are not only to take care children but also to provide the needs and wants of the
family, and these are the most important responsibilities regarding parenthood. Most works
are stressful and tedious where fathers come home exhausted. Where they cannot be able
perform physical activities due to lack of energy.

To sum up everything had been stated so far, this study suggests that working
parents face similar barriers that hinder in participating physical activities, as well as, being
physically active. As parents they mostly tend to prioritize their families first but apparently it
could also lessen self considerations about health. Interventions might focus on highlighting
physical activity benefits that are relevant to the whole family, teaching creative and
convenient ways to prioritize physical activity, and providing a supportive environment, both
in the workplace within the home.

1.5. Give some recommendations on the article or study that you’ve read.
As far as I know, this research article is perfectly fine and really helps me to deeply
understand why some parents here in our community do not have time to engage
themselves in physical activities. It is all clear to my mind that parents, valued things
regarding family more than their selves, as well as, setting goals for the benefits of
family’s future. I have nothing to give any recommendations on it, since everything is
excellent. But a thing that I can do is to asks people to read this article because they can
learn a lot from it and they will learn to appreciate their parents even more.
