Give at least 5 definitions of each of the following:

1. SCIENCE
• Science, any system of knowledge that is concerned with the physical world and
its phenomena and that entails unbiased observations and systematic
experimentation. In general, a science involves a pursuit of knowledge covering
general truths or the operations of fundamental laws.

• The word "science" probably brings to mind many different pictures: a fat
textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering through a
telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's equations scribbled on a
chalkboard, the launch of the space shuttle, bubbling beakers …. All of those
images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture
because science has so many facets:

• Science consists of observing the world by watching, listening, observing, and

recording. Science is curiosity in thoughtful action about the world and how it
behaves.
• Observing the world.
• Watching and listening
• Observing and recording.

Science is curiosity in thoughtful action about the world and how it

behaves.
Anyone can have an idea about how nature works. Some people think
their idea is correct because "it seems right" or "it makes sense." But for a
scientist (who could be you!), this is not enough. A scientist will test the idea in
the real world. An idea that predicts how the world works is called a hypothesis.
If an idea, or hypothesis, correctly predicts how something will behave, we call it
a theory. If an idea explains all the facts, or evidence, that we have found, we also
call it a theory.

• Science can be thought of as both a body of knowledge (the things we have
already discovered), and the process of acquiring new knowledge (through
observation and experimentation—testing and hypothesising). Both knowledge
and process are interdependent, since the knowledge acquired depends on the
questions asked and the methods used to find the answers.

The field of ‘science’ is often grouped into:

➢ natural science—life or biological science (the study of living organisms)
and physical science (the study of the material universe including physics,
chemistry, space science etc).
➢ social science—the study of society and people (such as anthropology,
psychology)
➢ formal science—the study of logic and mathematics
➢ applied science—disciplines that rely on science and use existing
scientific knowledge to develop new applications, such as in engineering,
robotics, agriculture and medicine.
Both natural science and social science are known as empirical sciences. This
means that any theories must be based on observable phenomena, reproducibility
of results and peer review.

• According to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the definition of science is:

"knowledge attained through study or practice," or

"knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as
obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical
world."

What Does That Really Mean?

Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses

observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The
term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained
using that system.

2. TECHNOLOGY
• The definition of technology is science or knowledge put into practical use to
solve problems or invent useful tools. The system by which a society provides its
members with those things needed or desired.

• Technology is the study of how people use scientific knowledge to solve practical
problems. Technology can be anything from a simple tool or machine to complex
computer hardware. The roots of technology can be traced back to ancient
civilizations, with innovations like using waterwheels for grinding grain or
creating looms to weave fabric.

• Technology, the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of

human life or, as it is sometimes phrased, to the change and manipulation of the
human environment. The subject of technology is treated in a number of articles.
For general treatment, see technology, history of; hand tool.

• What Is Technology? Technology is a body of knowledge devoted to creating

tools, processing actions and the extracting of materials. The term ‘Technology”
is wide, and everyone has their way of understanding its meaning. We use
technology to accomplish various tasks in our daily lives, in brief; we can
describe technology as products and processes used to simplify our daily lives.
We use technology to extend our abilities, making people the most crucial part of
any technological system.

Technology is also an application of science used to solve problems. But it

is vital to know that technology and science are different subjects which work
hand-in-hand to accomplish specific tasks or solve problems.

• Technology means a lot of things these days. The word "technology" brings to
mind various devices, such as laptops, phones, and tablets. Technology may also
make you think of the internet, data, or advancements in the world of engineering.
This may be a narrow scope though, as technology includes so many creative
solutions to many everyday problems humans have faced all throughout history.

3. SOCIETY
• Society describes a group of people who share similar values, laws and traditions
living in organized communities for mutual benefits. Members of society often
share religions, politics or culture.
REFERENCE: https://www.reference.com/world-view/society-f198276facd80789
• Society is made up of individuals who have agreed to work together for mutual
benefit. It can be a very broad term, as we can make generalizations about what
the whole of Western society believes, or it can be a very narrow definition,
describing only a small group of people within a given community. But no matter
the size, and no matter the link that binds a society together, be it religious,
geographic, professional or economic, society is shaped by the relationships
between individuals

REFERENCE: https://people.howstuffworks.com/what-is-society.htm

• A society, or a human society, is a group of people involved with each other

through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same
geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority
and dominant cultural expectations

• According to Thomas Hobbes, it came to existence and was formed because

people needed something (which is society) which would offer protection by
binding everyone to a set of rules to avoid chaos and would benefit them.
However, this theory does have its criticisms as it may not have come up from a
contract that which is made up by individuals who have decided to work together
for further benefit especially when they have been said to be brutish and nasty and
anthropologist has found that most primitive people lived in some form of society
or another however unorganized it is.

• The term society is derived from the Latin word ‘socius’ which means
‘association, companionship, togetherness. Thus, society refers to a group of
people living together with shared cultures, having social interactions and inter-
relationships.

Society has been viewed as a system, made up of inter-related and inter-

dependent parts that function together to maintain the system as a whole.
