Food for Education uses a social enterprise model that caters healthy and convenient meals to
Kenyan corporates and private institutions. To cover the cost of subsidies, they run a food
delivery business that converts profits into school lunches that keep children in school, improve
their learning ability and opportunities to use education to break out of the cycle of poverty.
The organization targets over 2,000,000 middle class Kenyans who work in offices of local and
international corporations and businesses in urban areas to delivery healthy, affordable,
authentic, and convenient office lunches. The profits earned provide school lunches targeting
over 5,000,000 children who go to school hungry each day in Kenya to improve educational
outcomes.
Food for Education is Kenya’s first social-enterprise-modeled sustainable-feeding program that
uses lean processes and design thinking to provide meals cost effectively and efficiently. Parents
contribute 48% of the meal cost while the community, composing of individuals and
corporations through a commercial business such as double portion restaurant covers the
remaining 52%. This organization sources fresh food directly from local farmers and delivers
nutritious, subsidized meals to individuals and corporations who have limited access to fresh
produce with the profits enabling the subsidy of healthy nutritious meals for hungry children.
* Wawira founded Food for Education in 2012 while doing her Nutrition degree at the
University of South Australia to address the inequality in education in her community in Kenya
due to inequality in food access. (Include the other info’s on organization profile)
