Questions Answers Marks earned

Being a student of Research, you Option 1: Convenience Sampling 2

are required to answer the
following questions: Option: Snowball Sampling
1. Which Non-Probability Sampling technique
Technique should be adopted by the
researcher in the given scenario?
(Marks: 2)
Give two justifications in this Option 1: As clearly mentioned in 2
regard. the scenario that the infrastructure
(Marks:4+4=8) is destroyed due to heavy rainfall
and the Unions and hospitals are
reluctant to provide lists to the
researcher for data collection hence
Convenience Sampling is the most
appropriate Non-Probability
Sampling Technique in this regard.

Option: The researcher can also

adopt a Snowball Sampling
technique in which he can initially
select elements (affected people)
and ask them to identify other
probable elements for the purpose
of data collection.

Scenario

The recent monsoon has affected the Sindh province particularly Karachi which recorded the
heaviest rainfall measuring 74.3mm. Rain floods have affected the residential and commercial
areas, damaging properties and disrupting the power and telecommunication system. The
intensity of the rain is likely to be increased and continued for the next few weeks. The Pakistan
Meteorological Department (PMD) wants to collect data from the people who got injured by the
recent rain floods in the residential areas of Karachi. The purpose is to list the hardships,
financial losses, and dislocation of families. PMD in this regard has hired the services of a
researcher to conduct a study and collect data from such people. Quick and efficient data is
required in this regard. Initially, the researcher tried to collect the data from unions and hospitals
in the affected areas in order to gather data but, both entities showed non-corporation and
reluctance to provide the list of people because of security and privacy reasons. The list of
people is also incomplete thus the data set was not reliable. While keeping issues of difficulty in
accessing people due to destroyed infrastructure and lack of data, the researcher is planning to
collect the data from the affected people who are easily available by directly visiting the hospital
wards. The results of the study will be of utmost importance for the PMD to take immediate
necessary actions for the affected people.

Question#1:

Which Non-Probability Sampling Technique should be adopted by the researcher in the given
scenario? (Marks: 2)

There are multiple non-probability sampling techniques nut in this scenario convenience sampling
technique is used because it is an accidental and haphazard sampling in the accidental situation of flood.
Question#2:

Give two justifications in this regard. (Marks:4+4=8)

1st Justification:

Reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if5vzDcBfEk
The list or data of people is incomplete because the researcher attempted to acquire data from unions

and hospitals in the contaminated areas, but both organizations exhibited non-corporation and resistance

to share a list of people due to departmental security and privacy concerns. So in this scenario they visit

the patients and other ordinate, the research comes in convenience sampling. It give test idea to PMD

about the concerned situation of damaging properties and other causalities flood.

2nd Justification:

Research is in its exploratory phase so researchers visit the affected people because fast research and

efficient data needed and they have not a long period for planning so they directly concern with patients

or people inside or outside hospital or unions. People are more convenient to provide this information.
