CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the processes and procedures that were followed I carrying out the study are

discussed under the following sub-headings:

3.1 Method of Data Collection

3.2 Research Design
3.3 Population of Study
3.4 Sample and Sampling Techniques
3.5 Instrument for Data Collection
3.6 Validity of Instrument
3.7 Reliability of Instrument
3.8 Procedure for Data Collection
3.9 Method of Data Analysis

3.1 Method of Data Collection

In the course of this study, both primary and secondary method of data was used. The

secondary data collection refers to gathering information that’s already available. The data

was previously collected, has undergone necessary statistical analysis and is owned by the

researcher. For the purpose of this research the secondary data used were sought from press

release of EFCC and the Ministry of Finance issued to press houses which includes:

 Vanguard (EFCC says it recovered N738.96bn in 2 years. Vanguard News.

https://www/vanguard.com/.../efcc-sa... Accessed 19th August 2022)

 Daily Trust (EFCC recovered N473bn in 2017 – Magu.

https://wwwdailytrust.com.ng/efcc… Accessed 19th August 2022)

 Premium Times (Finance Ministry Panel recommends dismissal of suspended SEC

boss. https://www.premiumtimesng.com-news. Accessed 23rd August 2018,

Corruption: EFCC secured about 1,500 convictions in 14 years official.

https://www.premiumtimeseng.com. Accessed 10th August 2018)

 Tribune (Why EFCC, ICPC continue to lose corruption cases – Akin Olujimi.

www.tribuneonlineng.com/efcc-ICPC. Accessed 19th August 2018)

The primary data used for this research was gathered from respondents by the researcher

herself using questionnaire method. The questionnaire consists of two sections, section one is

for personal data while the section two consist of 20 questions and five point likert scale

3.2 Research Design

In the course of this study, the descriptive research was applied in the gathering of required

information from a subset of certain population with use of some sampling techniques

3.3 Population of the Study

The population of this study consist of 200 civil servants from five (5) Local Government

Area of Lagos State represented in the table below.

Table 3.1: List of Local Governments

Name of Local Governments Numbers of Pupils

Somolu Local Government 45
Ikeja Local Government 48
Ikorodu Local Government 32
Lagos - Island Local Government 37
Oshodi - Isolo Local Government 38
Total 200
3.4 Sample and Sampling Techniques

The sampling technique used in this study is random sampling. The total number of civil

servants used in all are 200 pupils, comprising of 100 male civil servants and 100 female civil

servants from five selected Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Name of Local Government Areas Male Female Total

s
Somolu Local Government 22 23 45
Ikeja Local Government 20 28 48
Ikorodu Local Government 18 14 32
Lagos - Island Local Government 20 17 37
Oshodi - Isolo Local Government 20 18 38
Total 100 100 200

3.5 Instrument of Data Collection

The instrument used for data collection in this research is questionnaire developed by the

researcher. The questionnaire consists of two sections, section one is for personal data while

the section two consist of 20 questions and five point likert scale ranging from Strong Agree

(SA), Agree (A), Undecided (U), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD). Question 1 – 7

focuses on Hypothesis 1, 8 – 14 focuses on Hypothesis 2, while 15 – 20 focuses on

Hypothesis 3.

3.6 Validity of the Instrument

The type of validity used for this study is the face and content validity. The purpose of this

exercise is to identify whether the developed instrument really agree with the content of the

research questions.

The instrument used for data collection is a questionnaire which was developed by the

researcher. The questionnaire was validated by the supervisor in-charge of the research study

who made constructive instructional corrections and suggestion before it was administered.

3.7 Reliability of the Instrument

The research instrument was subjected to test-retest reliability, where the questionnaire was

administered to a few civil servant outside the sample and after two weeks, the same test was

administered to the same group of civil servant again and the two result were correlated using

t-test correlation. Co-efficient was found to be (0.89) which was considered to be high

enough.

3.8 Procedure for Data Collection

The procedure for the collection of data for this research is through administering

questionnaire in order to gather information from the respondent. 200 copies of questionnaire

was distributed among civil servant from five (5) Local Government Area of Lagos. The

response of the questionnaire will be shown in the chapter four.

3.9 Method of Data Analysis

The response of the subject will be computed and analyzed using Chi-Square Test. A hi-

Square is a statistical test used to compare observed results with expected results. The

purpose of this test is to determine if a difference between observed data and expected data is

due to chance or it is due to a relationship between the values you are studying. Therefore,
the Chi-Square test is an excellent choice to help us better understand and interpret the

relationship between the hypotheses raise for this research work.

The formula is given below:

2
2 (O−E)
x =∑
E

Where: O is Observed Frequency

E is Expected Frequency
The analysis will be used by the researcher to draw the conclusion of this research work.
