Abstract title

GPS "Open Way" versus printed map guiding

Abstract text

Background

In this experiment, we studied the ability of a group of blind


people using the GPS ‘Open Way’ for hiking and the Electronic
Travel Aid "Tom Pouce 3" at the same time. The "Tom pouce 3"
is a white cane with laser, infrared detection and tactile feedback.
We compared the results with another sighted group using a
printed map including the same level of informations and
comments.

The first group was made of blind people using the "Tom Pouce
3" in their daily lives for at least one year and having some hours
of practice on the GPS "Open way".

The GPS "Open Way" indicates the heading and distance to the
next point, and the deviation of the turn point. The informations
were transmitted vocally with a bone conduction headset.

The second group was composed of sighted people using a


printed map with the same level of informations and comments.

The walking path was 4km long.

Methods

The participant of both groups had a GPS tracker in their pocket


to record their track. The supervisors compared each segment of
the original path with the behavior of both groups. We compared
the length of the trajectory to see if it was the shortest one, and
the average speed on each segment.

Results and discussion

We discussed the differences between both groups and analyzed


the situations where blind people are slower. We finally proposed
improvements to the GPS application to reduce the differences of
efficiency between the two groups.
