a. Why did the Catholic Church actively oppose the passing of the Rizal Bill?
1. In no more than three (3) sentences, answer the following questions:
a. Why did the Catholic Church actively oppose the passing of the Rizal Bill?
The Rizal Bill's passage is actively opposed by the Catholic Church due to its anti-church
components. The bill was contentious because it was opposed not only by members of the
Legislative Arm but also by the Catholic Church, as it required readings from Rizal's writings,
which, according to the church, it make fun of Catholic doctrines. The Church also wanted to
close a dark chapter in Philippine history, when its priests were more focused on temporal
power than on eternal life and Christ's teachings.
b. What provision from the Rizal Bill allowed the government to approve it that answers the
arguments provided by the Catholic Church?
The Rizal bill was restricted by the Catholic Church, and as a result, the government was able
to approve it in response to the church's arguments. Catholic schools have also threatened
to shut down in opposition if the measure passes. Recto quickly rebutted, saying that the
church did not want schools to be nationalized if this happened.
c. Did the Church's views on the study of Jose Rizal's life and works change over the years? Why or
why not?
I think the Church's views on Rizal's life and work have changed as time has passed, but the
ideals for which Rizal fought cannot be realized by spreading lies and exaggerations about
an important Philippine institution in Filipinos' daily lives. The issue is not just the state of
Catholicism in the Philippines or the rise or fall of Rizal's fame, but also a truer, more
complete understanding of who we are as a country, our history, and our culture. Without
these institutions and our heroes, we won't be aware of our strengths blind to our human
strengths and flaws, and oblivious to both our accomplishments and errors preventing us
from making informed decisions about the future.
3. What drove the Filipinos to actively pursue Rizal's literary works in their quest for national identity?
Justify your answer in no more than three (3) sentences.
As time has passed, I believe the Church's perspectives on Rizal's life and
work have evolved but the values for which Rizal fought cannot be realized by
propagating untruths and exaggerations about a Philippine institution that
plays a significant part in Filipinos' lives. The issue is not only the status of
Catholicism in the Philippines, or the increasing or decreasing of Rizal's glory
In our search for a sense of national identity, we Filipinos were motivated by our culture and
history to actively pursue Rizal's literary works. Rizal has given direction and set the bar high
for what is essential as Filipinos seek to understand themselves and seek assistance from
other nations. Filipinos must band together and cooperate in order to defeat a common foe
and prevail, as was shown during the fight with the Spaniards.
