REFLECTION PAPER 1: MASID-DANAS

REFLECTION PAPER: MASID- DANAS

Homeland Townhomes in Barangay Tandang Sora, Quezon City, is where I live. It's a small
neighborhood with only a few houses. The present social issue affecting the community would
be pollution in the Dario Creek, it’s a small but long creek near our subdivision. Based on my
observation and interview, the main cause of water pollution in the creek would be the informal
settlers and some houses beside it that throw a variety of garbage in it. The sector of the
community that is most affected by it are the houses near the said creek. When the water
pollution worsened, the water started stinking, which caused the people that are affected to feel
unpleasant in their sense of smell, and feel dizzy. The residents said that the smell was really
intolerable and smelled like decomposing various types of water. Our barangay quickly
responded, calling for an immediate cleaning of the creek. Different Barangays joined to clean
and maintain the creek since it's not just our barangay that was affected by the issue. They sent
people to clean it, taking tons of garbage polluting the water. My first-hand experience pertaining
to the social issue would be me experiencing the awful smell of the creek, because my friends
and I decided to check the creek ourselves. It changed ourselves with the lesson we learned from
that experience, that it doesn’t mean we don’t experience any problems in the beginning, we will
just ignore it, small problems when put together leads to a bigger problem. I chose this issue
because it’s related to poverty, and because they lack knowledge and resources to contain their
trash, it led to improper human waste disposal.

REFLECTION PAPER 2: SURI-NILAY
REFLECTION PAPER: SURI-NILAY

As a Lasallian Christian young man, my immediate thought on the social issue seen in the
community would be the primary reason as to why they dump their garbage in the creek would
be their lack of education and they may be thinking that they won’t be affected anyway when a
problem arises. In my opinion, I am part of this social issue in a way that I need to take part and
do something to solve this problem. I am affected by this social issue in a sense that we don’t
know what could happen when the problem gets worse, the problem may occur again and this
time it could reach our home and affect us directly, another scenario would be because the creek
is filled with garbage, when it rains hard, the creek might overflow the wall which blocks it. A
situation that complicates or worsens the issue would be, it may not just be the informal settlers
causing the problem but also those other houses near the creek or it could also be houses in our
neighborhood. My initial thoughts on these would be if they really are the ones throwing garbage
in the creek, then they are the ones creating the problem themselves and in order to solve the
problem, they need to educate themselves that the problem they’re creating doesn't just affect
them but also a lot of people. An experience by St John Baptist De La Salle related to the issue
would be him teaching the less privileged. It’s an example and a solution to the problem, because
the problem could be solved through education. We need to educate ourselves on the pros and
cons of our actions, we shouldn’t judge others based on their status, instead help them to be
better individuals and take part in the solution. La Salian values could be exemplified in the issue
through action, for instance, aside from helping them get educated, we could also take part in
organizations that aim to provide their needs and lastly, we could also show our concern by
praying for them.
The 3 scriptural passages I’ve chosen would be first Numbers 35:33 “Do not pollute the
land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land
on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it”. Another scripture
would be from Proverbs 14:31 NIV “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” And the last scripture I chose would be from 2
Corinthians 9:6-7 “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever
sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your
heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” I chose these
verses because it’s related to social issues. I chose the first one because there's a clear
commandment from that lord that do not pollute the land. In my understanding the land he’s
pertaining to would be his creation, let’s not cause pollution to his creation. The second and third
verse are related because the second verse entails that we shouldn’t oppress the poor, while the
third verse is saying let’s be generous to everyone. to connect it, it states that we shouldn’t
oppress the poor. Instead, we should help them and give whatever we can give because God
loves people who know how to share. The church is saying that we should honor God by
appreciating His creations, expressing gratitude for them, and striving to keep them beautiful.
We should conserve resources, protect nature, and avoid pollution and waste. My thought on
these would be, I agree let’s not take part in polluting the Lord’s creation, instead let’s be an
instrument to preserve it and share whatever we can share to those who are in need.

REFLECTION PAPER 3: TAYA-KILOS

REFLECTION PAPER: Taya-Kilos

Commitment and Action is necessary in order to alleviate the social issue I have identified
in my community. There were 2 programs taken by the Quezon City local government in order to
resolve the issue. The first action was the Q.C Government through the Environmental Protection
and Waste Management Department and Pure Earth group held a clean-up activity of Dario Creek
in observance with the Earth Day in 2019. And another activity was the recent clearing operation
of Quezon City River Waste Clearing Operations Group to various creeks last September 2021. In
my opinion, these cleaning operations will not suffice if they don’t do it regularly because at the
end of the day, people will still throw garbage in it. The first local action taken was a lot of
churches in the country are doing a cleanup campaign to promote a cleaner and healthier
environment, tons of garbage that consists mostly of used unusable tires and disposable bottles
were obtained from that cleaning activity. Another action taken was the Roman Catholic Church
encouraging everyone to take part in the challenges raised by environmental issues. In my
opinion, What the church is doing will suffice the social issue because it’s a good advocacy,
everyone just needs to take part in it.

As a Lasallian, there are a lot of things I can do to improve the situation such as practicing
proper waste management, because I believe that we cannot educate others, if we have not
educated ourselves. An act of justice I can do to improve the situation is to suggest to the
government to implement stricter laws regarding improper waste disposal. Implementing stricter
laws will help them be aware that what they are doing is wrong and it's becoming a problem in
the society. An act of charity I can do is to donate basic needs such as clothing and food and
another act would be to take part in organizations that aim to teach the less fortunate children
living in poverty. An agency that I think could improve the situation would still be the Q.C
Government through the Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department. I
believe that they are the most capable in addressing the issue, they only need to do it regularly.
There is a need for me to do these things because it’s the least I can do to alleviate the
social issue. In terms of commitment, I’ve been looking forward to being of help to those who
are in need. I’m going to take part in organizations that aim to help children living in poverty and
volunteer to teach them when the pandemic subsides. In terms of support, I’m going to ask my
parents because I know they’ll help me fulfill my simple plan in helping those who are in need.
Collaboration is important in my simple plan of action because it improves productivity and solves
problems faster.

Short prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise and glorify you, thank you for all the blessings you have
bestowed upon my life. You have provided me with everything I need. Lord, for the past few
weeks, I’ve observed a social issue which bothers me. A lot of people litter on the creek near our
place. Father, they may not be aware of the consequence of their action, provide them with the
knowledge they need, touch their minds and hearts that they may reflect on their actions. I also
pray for wisdom and strength to put my plan into action. Help me be an instrument to help these
people, it’s not just for my sake but for everyone that has been affected. Guide my heart Lord,
that I may not go astray. I know Lord that it’s not going to be an easy task, but I’m up for the
challenge because I know you'll always be there for me. I also hope Lord that this pandemic will
soon be over, a lot of people are struggling. And lastly Lord, I pray for the people who're going to
help me work on this social issue. Help us accomplish our goals and mission for your name’s sake.
Thank you for everything Father. Forgive our sins and shortcomings, this I ask. In Jesus name,
Amen
