1. Who is/are the project sponsors, the customers and end users of the product
and what are their needs & expectations in this example?

a) The Project sponsors

In the example the project sponsors are the potential new homeowners. They

need accurate cost estimates involved in building the house and they expect to

complete the housing project within budget and time constraints.

b) The Customers

The present customers in the example are the potential new homeowners.

c) End Users

The End Users of the Project may be the potential new homeowner (investor),

another new buyer, commercial property dealer and Tenant.

2. Who is the Project manager and who are the project team members?

a) Project manager

The project manager in the example is the general contractor, responsible for

building the house. He or she needs to work with all the project stakeholders to

meet their needs and expectations.

b) Project team members

The project team for building the house included several construction workers,

electricians, carpenters, and so on.

3. What are the needs & expectations of the project team members?

The project team members require materials and equipment at the

construction site. They are expected to provide the materials and equipment by the

contractor or the house owner. Their work would need to be coordinated since there

are many interrelated factors involved.

4. What important decisions the project sponsor would have to make to keep
the costs of the project within their budget?

The project sponsors would be the potential new homeowners. The new

homeowners would have to make important decisions to keep the costs of the

house within their budget. Can they afford to finish the basement right away? If they

can afford to finish the basement, will it affect the projected move-in date?

5. Who are the supporting staff and how would they support the project?

Supporting staff might include the employers of the homeowners, the general

contractor’s administrative assistant, and other people who support other

stakeholders. The support the project by providing their services.

6. Who are the suppliers in this project and what are their needs &
expectations?

Building a house requires many suppliers. The suppliers would provide the

wood, windows, flooring materials, appliances, and other items. Suppliers would

expect details on what items they need to provide and where and when to deliver

those items.

7. Who are the additional stakeholders and what are their interests in the
project?

Additional stakeholders would include the city council and mayor, who would

be interested in increasing revenues. They might suggest certain guidelines for the

minimum value of the homes for providing adequate property taxes. The city may

also have regulations to ensure the safety of the public in the area of the

construction site. The local housing inspector would also be a stakeholder,

concerned with ensuring that everything meets specific codes and regulations.

8. Who may oppose the project and what possible influence they may have on
the project?

There may or may not be opponents to a project. In this example, there

might be a neighbour who opposes the project because the workers are making so

much noise that she cannot concentrate on her work at home, or the noise might

awaken her sleeping children. She might interrupt the workers to voice her

complaints or even file a formal complaint. Alternatively, the neighbourhood might

have association rules concerning new home design and construction.

10. What lessons (related to stakeholders) did you learn from this example?

Form this example, we learnt that it is important to identify the internal and

external stakeholders of the project, their expectations and needs. They affect the

project activities both positively and negatively. Stakeholder identification provides a

vivid image of your project constraints.
