Expected Outcome: • To emphasize the concept of advanced counting methods, recurrence relations, and generating functions • To provide a comprehensive idea about vector spaces, linear transformations, graphs and their applications Unit No. 1 ADVANCED COUNTING TECHNIQUES Number of hours: 9 The Basics of counting ‐ Pigeonhole principle –Permutations and combinations‐Recurrence relations‐ Solving recurrence relations‐Divide and Conquer method – Generating functions‐ Solution to recurrence relations. Unit No. 2 ALGEBRAIC COMPUTATION Number of hours: 9 Languages and Grammars ‐ Finite state machines with output and with no output ‐ Language recognition Unit No. 3 BASICS OF GRAPHS Number of hours: 9 Introduction; Paths and circuits‐ Walks paths and circuits; connected graphs, disconnected graphs, and components; Euler graphs; Hamiltonian paths and circuits; Trees and Fundamental circuits – Trees, Some properties of trees; Cut sets and cut vertices – Cut – sets, Some properties of cut ‐ sets; Matrix representation of graphs – Incidence matrix, adjacency matrix; Directed graphs ( basic definitions ). Applications: Networks flows, Travelling salesman problem
