InTRODUCTIOn
Throughout the following pages, you will find a breakdown of the salary ranges and contract rates across selected roles, technologies and industries. Information has been collated from Hudsons placements and in consultation with our national teams of specialist recruitment consultants.

Overall, as restrictions on headcount are lifted, and contractors that opted for permanent positions during the GFC return to contract work, there is renewed confidence of a sustainable pipeline of opportunity for permanent jobs, particularly for business analysts and project managers. we have seen significant salary pressure on organisations where they are reluctant to flex existing salary bands to secure the best candidates. Roles are being offered at a salary mid-point but to attract the top talent employers are increasingly improving offers to pay at the higher end of their salary range. we have also seen an increase for specialist security resources, as cloud computing services have become more prevalent and organisations consider the implications of online security risks inherent in their deployment. Specifically, the banking and tertiary education sectors have initiated a range of projects focussed around compliance and security and this has generated a strong demand for ERp specialists in permanent roles. In Wellington, the demand for contractors remains high, with employers having to act quickly to snap up strong candidates in a competitive market. There is constant demand for enterprise architects and senior Java and .nET developers in particular. During 2010 there were fewer testing roles in wellington, and there has been modest movement in this skill set in 2011 to date. There is expected to be an increase in demand for all ICT roles in the public sector leading up to July and August, but that is expected to plateau with the election in november.

MARkET SYnOpSIS
During 2009 and 2010, many middle management roles were disestablished in the ICT sector, which saw salaries stagnating during this period, however, now many organisations are rebuilding their leadership teams for the future and salaries are gradually increasing as demand for high calibre candidates outstrips supply. This demand is driven by a continued high level of government related project activity, as well as increased investment from private sector firms developing ICT solutions to improve their competitive position. There is strong demand for all skill sets across the SDLC spectrum, with many salaries in the ICT profession in new zealand returning to pre-GFC levels. within the government itself, continued outsourcing and consolidation activity is likely to result in a reduction of the number of roles in operational support as government agencies and their suppliers continue to merge multiple services under central procurement and delivery initiatives. with a growing number of government departments merging, some new roles have been created and it is expected that many of these roles will be filled by external candidates. Across the country, we expect to see ongoing skills shortages for ICT roles as organisations continue to develop business-critical systems that drive them forward. new opportunities for permanent jobs are expected as restructures reach their conclusion and new projects aimed at generating operational efficiencies are initiated.

banking and telecommunications organisations are continuing to hire consistently as a number of new projects aimed at driving their markets forward are approved. A number of senior leadership positions arose in early 2011 which have seen local, as well as international, candidates appointed. This bears promise for the market as these new management appointees develop their new teams. In Auckland, contract rates held steady throughout the recession, however this has now levelled out with some skill sets proving scarce, driving rates back up as demand outstrips supply. project managers, business analysts, system engineers and infrastructure specialists are all widely sought after. we have also seen an increased demand for testers recently across all industry sectors. This is a significant change in the market, as a number of roles were lost to offshore providers during the downturn. There is continuing demand for roles that specialise in websphere, vMware, Cloud Computing, Sharepoint and CRM development.

The merging of the Auckland councils and the establishment of the new Super City saw an increase in demand for contractors specifically for their transformation projects and this is expected to continue throughout the remainder of 2011. with more projects approved, there has been an increased demand for experienced business analysts, both on a permanent and a contracting basis across the north Island. Last year, 20% of all positions our Auckland ICT team recruited were for business analysts (contract and permanent) this is the highest representation of any job type and we expect this to continue in 2011 across all sectors. with the onset of the Rugby world Cup, we expect that there will be a demand for professionals with online channel experience and we have already seen clients requesting project managers with these skill sets. we are also seeing high demand for support roles, such as network and system engineers.

In Christchurch, with many businesses and people displaced due to the earthquakes, there have been few changes in the public and government sector as projects are put on hold to concentrate on the citys re-building programme. Hudson does, however, have a handful of established international software solutions providers where it is business as usual. Overall, it is expected that the significant changes seen in other regions around new zealand will be reflected in Christchurch and recruitment opportunities will ramp up later this year.
