1 In the beginning was the Word, 1 In prīncipiō erat Verbum, et 1 Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ὁ Λόγος
and the Word was with God, and the Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ
Word was God. erat Verbum. Λόγος.

2 The same was in the beginning 2 Hoc erat in prīncipiō apud Deum. 2 Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν.
with God.

3 All things were made by him; and 3 Omnia per ipsum facta sunt: et 3 Πάντα δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ
without him was not any thing sine ipsō factum est nihil, quod χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἓν ὃ

7 The same came for a witness, to 7 Hic venit in testimōnium ut 7 Οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίᾱν ἵνα
bear witness of the Light, that all testimōnium perhibēret dē lūmine, μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα
men through him might believe. ut omnēs crēderent per illum. πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δι᾽ αὐτοῦ.

8 He was not that Light, but was 8 Nōn erat ille lūx, sed ut 8 Οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς, ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα

ἐγεννήθησαν.

14 And the Word was made flesh, 14 Et Verbum carō factum est, et 14 Καὶ ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο, καὶ
and dwelt among us, (and we habitāvit in nōbīs: et vīdimus ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεᾱσάμεθα

preferred before me: for he was est, ante mē factus est: quia prior ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός
before me. mē erat. μου ἦν.

17 For the law was given by Moses, 17 quia lēx per Mōysēn data est, 17 Ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη,
but grace and truth came by Jesus grātia et vēritās per Jēsum ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ
Christ. Chrīstum facta est. Χρῑστοῦ ἐγένετο.

18 No man hath seen God at any 18 Deum nēmō vīdit umquam: 18 Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρᾱκεν πώποτε· ὁ

19 And this is the record of John, 19 Et hoc est testimōnium Jōannis, 19 Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μαρτυρίᾱ τοῦ
when the Jews sent priests and quandō mīsērunt Jūdaeī ab Ἰωάννου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς
Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Jerosolymīs sacerdōtēs et Lēvītās ad αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων
Who art thou? eum ut interrogārent eum: Tū quis ̄ ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν
ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευείτᾱς
es? αὐτόν· σὺ τίς εἶ;

20 And he confessed, and denied 20 Et cōnfessus est, et nōn negāvit, 20 Καὶ ὡμολόγησεν, καὶ οὐκ

not. Art thou that prophet? And he Prophēta es tū? Et respondit: Nōn. προφήτης εἶ σύ; Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη· οὔ.
answered, No.

22 Then said they unto him, Who 22 Dīxērunt ergō eī: Quis es ut 22 Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ· τίς εἶ; Ἵνα
art thou? that we may give an respōnsum dēmus hīs quī mīsērunt ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψᾱσιν
answer to them that sent us. What nōs? quid dīcis dē teipsō? ἡμᾶς· τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ;
sayest thou of thyself?

23 He said, I am the voice of one 23 Ait: Ego vōx clāmantis in dēsertō: 23 Ἔφη· ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ
crying in the wilderness, Make Dīrigite viam Dominī, sīcut dīxit ἐρήμῳ· εὐθῡ́νατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κῡρίου·
straight the way of the Lord, as said Īsaiās prophēta. καθὼς εἶπεν Ἡσαΐᾱς ὁ προφήτης.
the prophet Esaias.

24 And they which were sent were 24 Et quī missī fuerant, erant ex 24 Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν
of the Pharisees. Pharīsaeīs. Φαρῑσαίων

25 And they asked him, and said 25 Et interrogāvērunt eum, et 25 Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν
unto him, Why baptizest thou then, dīxērunt eī: Quid ergō baptizās, sī tū αὐτῷ· τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ ὁ
if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, nōn es Chrīstus, neque Ēlīās, neque Χρῑστὸς, οὐδὲ Ἠλείᾱς, οὐδὲ ὁ
neither that prophet? prophēta? προφήτης;

26 John answered them, saying, I 26 Respondit eīs Jōannēs, dīcēns: 26 Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰωάννης
baptize with water: but there Ego baptizō in aquā: medius autem λέγων· ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι· μέσος
standeth one among you, whom ye vestrum stetit, quem vōs nescītis. ῡ̔μῶν ἕστηκεν ὃν ῡ̔μεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε,
know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me is 27 Ipse est quī post mē ventūrus est, 27 Ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος, οὗ οὐκ

John was baptizing. baptizāns. βαπτίζων.

29 The next day John seeth Jesus 29 Alterā diē vīdit Jōannēs Jēsum 29 Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν
coming unto him, and saith, Behold venientem ad sē, et ait: Ecce agnus ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει· ἴδε
the Lamb of God, which taketh Deī, ecce quī tollit peccātum mundī. ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὁ αἴρων τὴν
away the sin of the world. ἁμαρτίᾱν τοῦ κόσμου.

30 This is he of whom I said, After 30 Hic est dē quō dīxī: Post mē venit 30 Οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον·
me cometh a man which is vir quī ante mē factus est: quia ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς
preferred before me: for he was prior mē erat: ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός
before me. μου ἦν·

31 And I knew him not: but that he 31 et ego nesciēbam eum, sed ut 31 κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα
should be made manifest to Israel, manifestētur in Isrāēl, proptereā φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσρᾱήλ, διὰ τοῦτο

saw the Spirit descending from Jōannēs, dīcēns: Quia vīdī Spīritum λέγων ὅτι τεθέᾱμαι τὸ Πνεῦμα
heaven like a dove, and it abode dēscendentem quasi columbam dē καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερᾱ̀ν ἐξ
upon him. caelō, et mānsit super eum. οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτόν.

33 And I knew him not: but he that 33 Et ego nesciēbam eum: sed quī 33 Κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλ᾽ ὁ
sent me to baptize with water, the mīsit mē baptizāre in aquā, ille mihi πέμψᾱς με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι,
same said unto me, Upon whom dīxit: Super quem vīderīs Spīritum ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν· ἐφ᾽ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ
thou shalt see the Spirit dēscendentem, et manentem super Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον, καὶ μένον ἐπ᾽
descending, and remaining on him, eum, hic est quī baptizat in Spīritū αὐτόν, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν
the same is he which baptizeth with Sānctō. Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ.

34 And I saw, and bare record that 34 Et ego vīdī: et testimōnium 34 Κἀγὼ ἑώρᾱκα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα
this is the Son of God. perhibuī quia hic est Fīlius Deī. ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ.

35 Again the next day after John 35 Alterā diē iterum stābat Jōannēs, ̔

stood, and two of his disciples; et ex discipulīs ejus duo. Ἰωάννης, καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν

36 And looking upon Jesus as he 36 Et respiciēns Jēsum ambulantem, 36 Καὶ ἐμβλέψᾱς τῷ Ἰησοῦ
walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb dīcit: Ecce agnus Deī. περιπατοῦντι λέγει· ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ
of God! Θεοῦ.

37 And the two disciples heard him 37 Et audiērunt eum duo discipulī 37 Καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ
speak, and they followed Jesus. loquentem, et secūtī sunt Jēsum. αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος, καὶ ἠκολούθησαν
τῷ Ἰησοῦ.

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them 38 Conversus autem Jēsus, et vidēns 38 Στραφεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ
following, and saith unto them, eōs sequentēs sē, dīcit eīs: Quid θεᾱσάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας
What seek ye? They said unto him, quaeritis? Quī dīxērunt eī: Rabbī λέγει αὐτοῖς· τί ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν
Rabbi, (which is to say, being (quod dīcitur interpretātum αὐτῷ· Ῥαββεί, (ὃ λέγεται

dwellest thou? μένεις;

which is by interpretation, A stone. Πέτρος.

forth into Galilee, and findeth Galilaeam, et invēnit Philippum. Et εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίᾱν καὶ εὑρίσκει
Philip, and saith unto him, Follow dīcit eī Jēsus: Sequere mē. Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς·
me. ἀκολούθει μοι.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and 45 Invenit Philippus Nathanaēl, et 45 Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ
saith unto him, We have found him, dīcit eī: Quem scrīpsit Mōysēs in καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς
of whom Moses in the law, and the lēge, et prophētae, invēnimus ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται,
prophets, did write, Jesus of Jēsum fīlium Jōsēph ā Nazareth. εὑρήκαμεν, Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ
Nazareth, the son of Joseph. τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, 46 Et dīxit eī Nathanaēl: Ā Nazareth 46 Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ· ἐκ
Can there any good thing come out potest aliquid bonī esse? Dīcit eī Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι;
of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Philippus: Venī et vidē. Λέγει αὐτῷ Φίλιππος· ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε.
Come and see.

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to 47 Vīdit Jēsus Nathanaēl venientem 47 Εἶδεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ
him, and saith of him, Behold an ad sē, et dīcit dē eō: Ecce vērē ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει
Israelite indeed, in whom is no Isrāēlīta, in quō dolus nōn est. περὶ αὐτοῦ· ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσρᾱηλείτης
guile! ἐν ᾧ δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν.

that Philip called thee, when thou cum essēs sub fīcū, vīdī tē. φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν σῡκῆν, εἶδόν
wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. σε.

49 Nathanael answered and saith 49 Respondit eī Nathanaēl, et ait: 49 Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ·
unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of Rabbī, tū es Fīlius Deī, tū es rēx Ῥαββεί, σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ, σὺ
God; thou art the King of Israel. Isrāēl. βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσρᾱήλ.

50 Jesus answered and said unto 50 Respondit Jēsus, et dīxit eī: Quia 50 Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ·
him, Because I said unto thee, I saw dīxī tibi: Vīdī tē sub fīcū, crēdis? ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω
thee under the fig tree, believest Majus hīs vidēbis. τῆς σῡκῆς, πιστεύεις; Μείζω τούτων
thou? thou shalt see greater things ὄψῃ.
than these.

angels of God ascending and dēscendentēs suprā Fīlium hominis. Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας, καὶ
descending upon the Son of man. καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ
