1 Languages of the world

Unit overview

In this unit, students will:

● talk about languages they speak
● learn about the languages of Papua New Guinea
● learn about and discuss the advantages of knowing languages.
Students will build communication and literacy skills as they develop an awareness of
different languages that are spoken in different parts of the world. To do this, they will
talk about the languages that are spoken in the family and look at concepts such as
bilingualism, official languages and native language. They will expand their knowledge of
linguistic differences by looking at Tok Pisin, a language spoken in Papua New Guinea.
They will practise words and phrases in the new language and decide how good they are
at learning it. They will discuss the advantages of learning languages.
At the end of the unit, students will apply and personalise what they have learned by
designing a mobile phone app to help them learn languages.
