Directions: Combine the sentences, using the second sentence as an adjective clause. Give all the
possible patterns.
1. The book was good. I read it.
= the book which/that I read was good.
2. I liked the woman. I met her at the party last night.
= I liked the woman who(m)/that I met at the party last night.
3. I liked the composition. You wrote it.
= I liked the composition which/that you wrote.
4. The people were very nice. We visited them yesterday.
= the people who(m)/that we visited yesterday were very nice.
5. The man is standing over there. Ann brought him to the party.
= the man who(m)/that I was telling you is standing over there.

Directions: Combine the sentences, using the second sentence as an adjective clause. Give all the
possible patterns.

1. The meeting was interesting. I went to it.


= the meeting which/that I went to was interesting.
2. The man was very kind. I talked to him yesterday.
= the man to whom I talked yesterday was very kind.
3. I must thank the people. I got a present from them.
= I must thank the people who(m)/that I got a present from.
4. The picture was beautiful. She was looking at it.
= the picture which/that she was looking at was beautiful.
5. The man is standing over there. I was telling you about him.
= the man who(m) I was telling you is over there.
6. I ran into a woman. I had gone to elementary school with her.
= I ran into a woman who(m)/that I had gone to elementary school.
7. The topic was interesting. Omar talked about it.
= the topic which/that omar talked was interesting.
8. The people were friendly. I spoke to them.
= the people who(m)/that I spoke were friendly.
9. Olga wrote on a topic. She knew nothing about it.
= olga wrote on a topic which/that she knew nothing.
10. The candidate didn't win the election. I voted for her.
= the candidate who(m)/that I voted for didn’t win the election.

EXERCISE 4. Adjective clauses.


Directions: Identify the adjective clause in each sentence. Then give the other possible patterns.

1. Did I tell you about the woman I met last night?


Adjective clause : I met last night
= did I tell you about the woman who(m)/that I met last night?
2. The woman I was dancing with stepped on my toe.
Adjective clause : I was dancing with
= the woman who(m)/that I was dancing with steeped on my toe.
3. The report Joe is writing must be finished by Friday.
Adjective clause : Joe is writing
= the report which/that Joe is writing must be finished by Friday.
4. The doctor who examined the sick child was gentle.
Adjective clause : who examined the sick child
= the doctor who(m)/that examined the sick child was gentle.
5. The people I was waiting for were late.
Adjective clause : I was waiting
= the people who(m)/that I was waiting for were late.
6. Did you hear about the earthquake that occurred in California?
Adjective clause : that occurred in California
= did you hear about the earthquake which occurred in California.
EXERCISE 5. Adjective clauses.
Directions: Combine the sentences, using the second sentence as an adjective clause. Give all the
possible adjective clause patterns. Discuss which patterns are used more commonly than others.

1. She lectured on a topic. I know very little about it.


= she lectured on atopic which/that I know very little about.
2. The students missed the assignment. They were absent from class.
= the students who/that were absent from class missed the assignment.
3. Yesterday I ran into an old friend. I hadn't seen him for years.
= yesterday I ran into and old friend who(m)/that I hadn’t seen for years.
4. The young women are all from Japan. We met them at the meeting last night.

8. The dogcatcher caught the dog. It had bitten my neighbor's daughter.
