Title : DUOLINGO AS AN EDUCATIONAL LANGUAGE TOOL TO ENHANCE EFL STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION IN


LEARNING ENGLISH

Isi Abstrak :

Duolingo is one of the modern applications that facilitate acquiring a second language. This research
aims at invesitigating students’ motivation in learning English through Duolingo as one of educational
language tool. (Latar belakang kajian)

This study used mixed method to explore and describe the phenomenon. Subjects of this study were 40
students of English department, which consisted of 10 male and 30 female. Data collection techniques in
this study were questionnaire and interviews, while the data analysis techniques in this study were data
reduction, data presentation, and conclusions.(Metode)The study revealed that the use of Duolingo
application was quite effective to enhance the students’ motivation in learning English.

This study showed that Duolingo is an app where every beginner can start learning a second language as
it motivates him / her to keep on making progress.(Hasil)

Nevertheless, Duolingo also needs improvement to cover more vocabulary, grammar rules and
languages, especially English, since it is the lingua franca of the world.(Kesimpulan)

Isi Abstrak :

This study aimed at designing a valid, practical and effective MT-BMLE model in English language
learning for elementary learners. (Latar Belakang) A developmental research by Plomp used as the
research method to fulfill some criteria in learning model components: learning syntax, social system,
management reaction principle, support system and instructional impacts. The design of MT-BMLE
learning model is intended to produce three final products: learning model book, teaching kits and
research instruments. There were four main stages applied in conducting this developmental research,
namely: Preliminary Research, Design and Prototype, Realization and Evaluation.

As the result, this study produced a valid, practical and effective MT-BMLE Model in English language
learning for elementary learners in rural learning area by providing English Lesson Plans, teaching
materials, teachers and students’ guide books, students’ worksheets and teaching media designed by
the teachers.(Hasil) Consequently, students are more active in English learning, increasing vocabulary
mastery and having high positive responses to learn English in remote learning environment. The
implication of this study encourages students to increase vocabulary mastery in English language
learning.

Further researches are recommended to implement this MT-BMLE learning model for higher level of
education to improve foreign language students’ language skills.(Kesimpulan)

Title : Reading to Learn (R2L) Model to Activate Students on Reconstruction Short Story

Isi Abstrak :

Reading to learn (R2L) is developed by D. Rose and J.R. Martin for a teacher to guide students to read
and to write a text. (Latar Belakang) R2L model has four stages: preparing for reading, detailed reading,
note-making, and joint construction. This article describes the implementation of the R2L model for
students to reconstruct a short story in Bahasa Indonesia subject. A teacher and third-year students of
Junior High School are involved in the study. The processes of teaching and learning for four meetings
are recorded by a video camera. The data are presented for each meeting. The result depicts that by R2L
with the inclusion of skimming, scanning, reading preparation, read in detail the students are able to
identify the keywords, paraphrase, and reconstruct a new short story.(Hasil)

Isi Abstrak :

The current study deals with the Foreign Language Training for university students seeking the Master
Degree in International Relations. The research focuses on the efficient organization of Foreign
Language for Specific Purposes (FLSP), including ESP, course regarding the professional competence:
meeting specific needs of the program stakeholders, designing it for adult learners of intermediate or
advanced levels, etc. The aim of the course participants’ training is to apply a foreign language in
professional work situations.(Latar Belakang) The learners are expected to get new knowledge and
experience through integrated education that includes more than one subject and tends to be more
effective. This article offers the theoretical and practical support for FLSP practitioners researching,
designing courses and providing materials for learners of the Master programs in International Relations
and related professional areas.(Hasil) The support includes problem-based training to develop students’
professional competence. The training focuses on the insights from designing an FLSP course for such
students, the analysis of their future job responsibilities, the stakeholders’ needs, as well as the FLSP
literature on integrated education approaches review, the Master study programs and Qualification
Requirements.

Title : Maritime English Learning Materials Based on Standard Training Certification and Watchkeeping
for Seafarers (STCW) Curriculum and Intercultural Competence (IC)

Isi Abstrak :

The objectives of this study is to investigate 1) the current existing conditions of Maritime English
learning materials of Deck Department of Maritime Education and Training (MET), 2) the Maritime
English learning materials needed by the students of Deck Department of Maritime Education and
Training (MET), and 3) the intercultural competences needed by the students. (Latar Belakang)

This study is conducted by qualitative method. (Metode) The respondents of the research are the active
students, lecturers, active and retired seafarers, cadets, port authority, and administration staff. They
are taken by purposive random sampling. The data are collected by questionnaire, documentary sheet,
and in depth interview. The data are analyzed by descriptive qualitative. The results of the study show
that 1) generally the existing Maritime English Materials mostly are not in line with the STCW’10 and
need to be developed in order to meet the minimum standard of Standard Training Certifications and
Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW’2010), 2) there are various topics of Maritime English learning
materials needed by the students in terms of both English language and content or professional
subjects, 3) and the various contents of intercultural competences are also needed by the students
before they go to work at sea in order to effectively communicate with other crew of different cultural
background.(Hasil)
