Practice
The key to growing one’s transcription proficiency is through practice. Nothing can
replace the value gained by listening to physician dictation and transcribing what has
been dictated. To that end, the CD-ROM found in the back of this book contains 50
dictated reports in the field of orthopaedics, along with corresponding Answer Keys.
The reports range in complexity from easiest to most difficult. Each Answer Key is
available as a PDF file, which not only displays the final transcribed report, but has
also been carefully reviewed to provide valuable feedback on the various components
of the report, to point out challenges specific to the dictation, and to indicate
common stumbling blocks encountered when transcribing these types of reports.
Where applicable, sources for grammar, style, and usage rules have been incorporated
into the PDF Answer Keys.

Each Answer Key is also available as a Microsoft Word file. Please note that the MS
Word files do not include feedback, so it is recommended that you review the PDF
file when comparing your transcribed report to an Answer Key. The MS Word files are
particularly useful in the classroom or for electronically comparing your transcript to
the Answer Key.

When transcribing the reports, use a report format (headings, spacing, etc.) with
which you are familiar, or use the format that is required by your facility. Note that
the formatting you use in your report will probably not match what appears in the
Answer Key, but this is acceptable as long as you remain consistent with your
heading styles.
