Competencies:
The learner poses real-life problems that can be solved by Statistics (M7SP - IVa -2) and formulates
simple statistical instruments (M7SP-IVa-3).
To the Learners:
Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you while enjoying the
lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of this module.
2. Writing enhances learning. Keep this in mind and take note of important concepts in your notebook.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the post-test and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!
Expectations
This module is designed to help learners pose real-life problems that can be solved by Statistics and
formulate simple statistical instruments.
Pre-test
A. Identify whether the following is a statistical question or not. Write (A) if it is an example of a
statistical question and (B) if not. Write your answers in your answer sheet.
1. What is each classmate’s shoe size?
2. How many grade 7 students took remediation classes in each learning area?
3. How many different cities have my classmates traveled?
4. How many pets does your teacher have?
5. How many points did the high school basketball team score in its last game?
Statistics is one of the many branches of Mathematics. It deals with the collection, organization,
analysis, and interpretation of data that help us answer real – life problems/scenarios. Remember that it is
inevitable, and you have probably encountered it in one form or another. Listed below are some importance of
Statistics:
A statistical question is one that can be answered by collecting data that vary (i.e., not all the data
values are the same). There are two types of data: numerical and categorical.
In a numerical data set, every value in the set is a number. Categorical data sets can take on non -
numerical values, such as names of colors, labels, etc. (e.g., “large,” “medium,” or “small”). Statistics is about
using data to answer questions. In this module, the following four steps will summarize your work with data:
You will be guided through this process as we go through this module. To begin with, what is a
statistical question and what does it mean when we say that a question can be answered by data?
Some asked:
Are the questions asked by the other students examples of Statistical Questions? To guide you, here are some
examples of Statistical and Non – Statistical Questions.
A Statistical Question is a question that can be answered by collecting various data. But how do we
recognize a statistical question?
● A question is not a statistical question if it has an exact answer. example: How old are you?
● A question is a statistical question if the answer is a percentage, range, or an average. example: How old
are the students in my Grade 7 Section 7?
● Summarizing Questions
How many hours per month do students in Math 7- Kamyas spend in studying?
● Comparing Questions
Do the students in Math 7- Kamyas spent more time at online games than they do in studying?
● Relationship Questions
Do students who spend more time playing mobile games do better in exams?
We use two types of data to answer statistical questions: numerical data and categorical data. If we
recorded the age of 25 basketball cards, we would have numerical data. Each value in a numerical data set is
a number. If we recorded the team of the featured player for 25 basketball cards, you would have categorical
data. Although you still have 25 data values, the data values are not numbers. They would be team names,
which you can think of as categories.
What you have done is an example of a survey in a form of a Questionnaire. For a more detailed
explanation or answer, the researcher can opt in using Interview.
Activities
Activity 1
For each of the following, determine whether the question is a statistical question. Write S for statistical
questions and N for not. Write your answers in your answer sheet.
Activity 2
Identify each of the following data sets as categorical (C) or numerical (N). Write your answers in your answer
sheet.
Example: Heights Answer: Numerical
1. Favorite flavor of ice cream
2. Hours of sleep on a school night
3. Type of beverage drank at lunch
4. Eye color
5. Number of pencils in each desk
Activity 3
Create your own statistical instrument (Questionnaire, Survey Sampling/ Interview Questions) which may result
to any of the following (choose only ONE topic):
CRITERIA POINTS
Accuracy 25
Measurable & Attainable 20
Timeliness 5
TOTAL 50
Remember
1. Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data. It
deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and
experiments.
2. Statistical question is one that can be answered by collecting data that vary (i.e., not all the data values
are the same).
3. Numerical data set deals only with numbers.
4. Categorical data sets can take on non-numerical values, such as names of colors, labels, etc. (e.g.,
A. For each of the following, determine whether the question is a statistical question (S) or not (N).
1. How many letters are in my last name?
2. How many letters are in the last names of the students in my class?
3. What are the colors of the shoes worn by students in my school?
4. What is the maximum number of feet that roller coasters drop during a ride?
5. What are the heart rates of students in a 7th Grade class?
B. Identify each of the following data sets as categorical (C) or numerical (N).
1. Arm spans of 12 seventh graders
2. Number of languages spoken by each of 20 adults
3. Favorite sport of each person in a group of 20 adults
4. Number of pets for each of 40 third graders
5. Number of hours a week spent reading a book for a group of middle school students
Problem: What are the ways to protect your family from COVID-19?
Post Test
B. Identify each of the following data sets as categorical (C) or numerical (N).

Reflection
Reflect on your learning and assess yourself as a student. Think about your progress. What works?
What else needs to be done to improve what you have learned? Identify what help your teacher can provide for
you so when you meet them, you can ask them relevant questions.
