Looking Back at your Lesson

Statistics is one of the many branches of Mathematics. It deals with the collection, organization,
analysis, and interpretation of data that help us answer real – life problems/scenarios. Remember that it is
inevitable, and you have probably encountered it in one form or another. Listed below are some importance of
Statistics:

a. contributes to better understanding and describing of a phenomenon in nature,

b. provides proper and efficient planning of a statistical inquiry in any field of study,
c. aides in collecting an appropriate quantitative data,
d. helps in presenting complex data in a suitable tabular and graphical form for an easy and clear
comprehension of data; and
e. draws valid inferences, along with a measure of their reliability about the population parameters from the
sample data.

Introduction of the Topic

Lesson 1: Statistical Questions

A statistical question is one that can be answered by collecting data that vary (i.e., not all the data
values are the same). There are two types of data: numerical and categorical.

In a numerical data set, every value in the set is a number. Categorical data sets can take on non -
numerical values, such as names of colors, labels, etc. (e.g., “large,” “medium,” or “small”). Statistics is about
using data to answer questions. In this module, the following four steps will summarize your work with data:

Step 1: Pose a question that can be answered by data.

Step 2: Determine a plan to collect the data.
Step 3: Summarize the data with graphs and numerical summaries.
Step 4: Answer the question posed in Step 1 using the data and summaries.

You will be guided through this process as we go through this module. To begin with, what is a
statistical question and what does it mean when we say that a question can be answered by data?

Consider the given real – life situation:

Mathematics 8 Quarter 4 Week 1 page 2

Ryan, a 7th Grader at Kalayaan National High School, is a huge basketball fan. He loves to collect
basketball cards. He has cards of current players and of players from past basketball seasons. With his
teacher’s permission, Ryan brought his basketball card collection to school. Each card has a picture of a
current or past National Basketball player, along with information about the player. When he placed his cards
out for the other students to see, they asked Ryan all sorts of questions about his cards.

Some asked:

● How many cards do you have altogether?

● What is the typical cost of a card in your collection?
● Where did you get the cards?

Are the questions asked by the other students examples of Statistical Questions? To guide you, here are some
examples of Statistical and Non – Statistical Questions.

Examples of Statistical Questions:

1. What do 7th Graders prefer to eat at dinner?

2. What time did the students in this class get up this morning?
3. What is the typical number of pets owned by the students in Grade 7 Section 7?

Examples of Non-Statistical Question:

1. What did Ryan eat for breakfast?

2. Did you pass your Math Answer sheets on time?
3. How many sisters does Riley have?

A Statistical Question is a question that can be answered by collecting various data. But how do we
recognize a statistical question?

● A question is not a statistical question if it has an exact answer. example: How old are you?
● A question is a statistical question if the answer is a percentage, range, or an average. example: How old
are the students in my Grade 7 Section 7?

3 Types of Statistical Questions:

● Summarizing Questions
How many hours per month do students in Math 7- Kamyas spend in studying?
● Comparing Questions
Do the students in Math 7- Kamyas spent more time at online games than they do in studying?
● Relationship Questions
Do students who spend more time playing mobile games do better in exams?

We use two types of data to answer statistical questions: numerical data and categorical data. If we
recorded the age of 25 basketball cards, we would have numerical data. Each value in a numerical data set is
a number. If we recorded the team of the featured player for 25 basketball cards, you would have categorical
data. Although you still have 25 data values, the data values are not numbers. They would be team names,
which you can think of as categories.

Lesson 2: Statistical Instruments
Survey is defined as a research method used for collecting data from a pre - defined group of
respondents to gain information and insights on various topics of interest. Surveys have a variety of purposes
and can be carried out in many ways depending on the methodology chosen and the objectives to be
achieved.

1. QUESTIONNAIRE is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions (or other types of

prompts) for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. The questionnaire was invented by
the Statistical Society of London in 1838.
2. INTERVIEW - is a conversation where questions are asked, and answers are given.

Exercise : Answer the Student Questionnaire below

What you have done is an example of a survey in a form of a Questionnaire. For a more detailed
explanation or answer, the researcher can opt in using Interview.

Activities

Activity 1

For each of the following, determine whether the question is a statistical question. Write S for statistical
questions and N for not. Write your answers in your answer sheet.

2. What are the favorite colors of 7th graders in my school?

3. How many years have the school’s dance squad competed?

4. What is the favorite subject of 7th graders at my school?

are the same).
3. Numerical data set deals only with numbers.
4. Categorical data sets can take on non-numerical values, such as names of colors, labels, etc. (e.g.,
