Plan of Investigation

The topic of my research is "The negative impacts of technology on Education" and the theme is,
Technology. I have selected this specific theme because the topic has drawn my attention to the
negative impact of technology. The research will enable me to learn more about the negative
impacts of technology on Education in the schools of Jamaica and its causes. While conducting
this School Based Assessment (SBA), it will help me to learn new words, thus increasing my
vocabulary, written and spoken aspects of the language. To carry out this research. I will utilize
three (3) pieces of materials-a quote based on the topic, a video, and an article from the local
newspaper. To research my topic, I intend to utilize my research skills in finding artifacts that
align to my topic, and more specifically, that support my theme. Additionally, my analytical skill
will be to scrutinize each artifact, particular in reflection 2 to find the language and tone used.
 Reflection 1

The first article that explored my topic, "The negative impacts of technology on Education'' was
a picture I got from the website named “quote master”.

image has shaped my thinking, making me aware of the negative impacts of technology on
education. According to the image due to the use of online chatting and shortcuts, the writing
skills of today's young generation have declined quite tremendously. The negative impact of
technology has not just affected children in school but also at home. Children tend to spend more
time on their mobile devices than reading or going outside to socialize. I now understand that
technology has its advantages and disadvantages on the education of children.

A similar theme was evident in a video I got from YouTube (https://youtu.be/eZH4c3JlXKE)

done by Tech Stuns , The name of this video is “Top 13 bad effects of modern technology for
students in education” .This material gives more information on the negative impacts of
technology on Education. This video also reveals to me how much technology has changed the
mindsets of children all around the world. It has allowed me to see what technology has done to
the learning system in schools, because of technology in schools most children have no interest
in learning, and this was evident in both pieces of data. This has now changed my thinking
because I have now seen the negative impacts that technology does to academic performance of
students. This makes me think that children going to school should spend less time on their
devices and focus on their assignments and study more.

The final piece of data that I examined was an expository news report posted may 26, 2022.

Kirin’s, the tittle of this news report is “The Negative Impact of Technology on Education”. The
information in this article aptly describes how technology has affected the writing skills of
children. This article precisely tells us that there have been signs of negative impacts on writing
skills amongst students using digital tools, as they have a tendency to write fast and carelessly,
using more and more abbreviations in their writings than they would when communicating
electronically. This has allowed me to gain more information on how technology have been
affecting the writing skills of children. I think that technology is also improves students’
academic achievement and enhance their motivation to accomplish their tasks, yet too much
reliance on technology also seems to affect negatively on their reading, writing and arithmetic
skills. So, this has made me feel that technology is a big distraction for students.
 Reflection 2

In the picture entitled “The negative impacts of technology on Education” the tone of the picture
is of concern “despite there being no one in danger” the image is projecting its attention to the
negative effects technology has on the writing and spelling skills of children. Concern was
shown in the 10TH line when the creator of this image said the negative effects technology in a
class is that it can take away valuable learning time. This just shows that technology doesn’t only
has advantages towards the education of children but also disadvantages. In the 7 th line it can be
seen where the creator of the image was very certitude that net-based readers are less able to
determine what is and is not a valid source and are less skilled in critical reading and thinking.
This shows how much technology has affected how children read and think.

The video entitled “Top 13 bad effects of modern technology for students in education” gives us
further information on how technology affects student’s education. The creator has made this
video simply to show us and give us a better understanding on how technology affects the
education of students in schools. It is shown where the creator of the video is trying to help us
apprehend this video by placing pictures of how students would react under the 13 reasons
stated. The way the images shows the viewers how students would react not just in classrooms
but also out of classrooms is very precise.

In the article “The Negative impact of Technology on Education”. The writer describes   four
main ways technology can impact negatively on the education process: the deterioration of
students’ competencies in reading, writing, and arithmetic. This article also gives me a tone of
concern, this can be seen in the 58th line when the writer said we should be careful not to be so
blinded by the good aspects brought by technology that we fail to pay attention to its negative
consequences. The way the language in which the writer wrote the information gave me a vivid
understanding of the topic. The line “Technology is not something new and specific to our
industrial civilization, but has been present ever since mankind began to walk the earth” , shows
that technology has been affecting students for many years.
