According to Ar. Glenn Magistrado who spoke and shared his knowledge
about Building Information Modeling (BIM), 22 years ago, Revit was once owned
by Charles River Software and eventually after a few years later, it was bought by
AutoCAD and as time passed by, the Revit software also developed. The
adaptation of the Revit software wasn’t easy because they were all fond of
AutoCAD before and having thoughts of using Revit gives off hesitancy and
comparison that manual drafting is still much preferred than digital drawings.
Although manual drafting is preferred by many especially senior architects,
digital drafting also has its advantages. It helps an Architect to lessen the time
consumed especially when there is a hectic schedule and deadlines for the
project. It also helps lessen the work load for revisions of drawings whether minor
or major revision.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is used for creating and managing
data during design, construction and operation processes. The difference of
AutoCAD from BIM is that, in AutoCAD it only has 2d drawings while in BIM, it
automatically creates elevations, sections and 3d models. BIM has planning,
design and build and it is not purely command based and is mostly like using an
office software unlike AutoCAD which is a command based software.
For me, I prefer to use BIM because it is convenient and I can measure the
drawings accurately and if I have revisions to make I can easily edit the drawings.
It is also a way to further enhance our skills in planning and designing however,
using digital software doesn’t diminish our creative thinking and limit our
imaginations, it’s just using technology as a way for us to develop more, together
with our society.
