1. How has our relationship to technology changed over the years?

What sorts of new behaviors does Turkle see with how people use technology?
- Turkle found that those little devices in our pockets, are so psychologically powerful that
they don’t only change what we do but they do change who we are. This powerful
devices setting us for trouble- trouble certainly in how we relate to each other, but also
trouble in how we relate to ourselves and our capacity for self reflection. We are getting
used to a new way of being alone together. People want to be with each other, but also
elsewhere-connected to all the different places they want to be. People want to
customize their lives. They want to go in and out of all places they are because the thing
that matters to them
- Such that people text or do email during corporate meeting. They text and shop and go
on facebook during classes. Parents also forgot to give their full attention to their kids
because they were busy texting and do emails. We even text at funerals. We remove
ourselves from our grief and we go into our phone. We are with our friends being
together while not being together because we are busy with our phone. We even
practicing the new skills of making eye contact while you’re texting. And this kind of set-
up getting us used to a new way of being alone together.
