Alcohol drinking for 18 years old

Introduction

At the age of 18 years, it is believed that curiosity is at its peak. People want to know and

explore things that they have been prohibited at that age, and in this case, they tend to perceive

drinking alcohol as taking the ‘forbidden fruit’ such that despite tireless enforcement to ignore

alcohol people find themselves drawn to it. Alcohol-related problems for teenagers at 18 years

should be minimized by giving them a chance to drink under tight regulations.

The curiosity, however, seizes when they taste the alcohol. Upon tasting, there are two

possible outcomes namely persistence and withdrawal from taking alcohol. Most drinking habits

at 21 years started while the people were still 18 years. The effect of peer pressure wilts

resilience to alcohol, and most alcohol drunkards at this age start drinking through the influence

of their seniors.

The gap between 21 and 18 years is so minimal such that the two age groups spend most

of their time together and as a matter of fact they learn from each other. The 18 years teenagers

aspire to live like the 21-year-old and enjoy that freedom which comes with age. They want to

party and rebel against what the society has kept away from them. The process of drinking starts

by trying, and the first shot initiates them into drinking. The teenagers are always worried that

once they are out of campus, they won’t get such opportunities to drink.

18-year-old shows aspects of less tolerance compared to 21 years old and in this case,

understanding is subject to age although not for all cases. An 18-year-old cares less about

responsibility since they have people who are there to take care of them. They don’t have any

others duties that will perhaps trigger mental growth and maturity. The ‘idleness’ is reflected in a

study which indicates that about 21 percent of under 21 years are heavy drinkers compared to 18

percent of those above 21 years (Ralph, et al. 138). The statistics further emphasizes that

approximately 33 percent of those below 21 years compared to 22 percent of ‘legal drinkers’ are

heavy drinkers (Ralph, et al. 142). Therefore, if alcohol is authorized to those less than 21 years,

then institutions and government structures will have an easy time to regulate alcohol drinking.

For instance, colleges can oversee alcohol by minimizing overdrinking and intoxication. The

administration can monitor drinking hubs and ensure that students adhere to alcohol regulation

acts and policies.

Stopping an 18 year from alcohol is an impossible task. At this age, teenagers identify

themselves as adults by taking alcohol, and to them, drinking is a lifestyle. They will always shift

away from any efforts to stop them. The society should be aware of the repercussions of

drinking given that the effects of alcohol are similar and standardizing drinking age at 21 doesn’t

sort out the issue.

Conclusion

The death cases of teens will persist if the government doesn’t make less than 21 years

legal age for taking alcohol. These cases are attributed to the fact that most of them succumb to

pressure and anxiety which frustrates and kills them. However, nations such as Greece and China

have legalized drinking for 18-year-old, and statistics indicate that there are very minimal

alcohol related cases. The police and security guards are mandated to monitor drinking in public

places while health officers check progress of teenagers in health centers.
