can help one to reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduced the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease
and cancer, and promote overall health.

NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF ADOLESCENTS
Boys and girls need same amount of nutrition. These nutritional needs increase sharply during adolescence.
These need are parallel to their rate of growth. At the peak of their growth spurt, the nutritional requirements
maybe twice as high as those of the remaining period of adolescence.

A. CALORIE:
Measurement used to express energy delivered by food. The body demands more calories during early adolescence
than any other time.

The body needs energy sources found in nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and Fats.

C. VITAMINS AND MINIRALS


Adolescent diet should contain sufficient amounts of all essential vitamins and minerals. However, adolescent tend to
fall short of their daily quotas of calcium, iron, zinc, and Vitamin D most often. In order to prevent and control each
deficiencies, proper nutrition must be given focus and outmost importance.

Teenage develop unusual eating habits. Very often, they eat many junk foods and they are fond of eating in
fast food restaurants. In order for them to achieve full growth and improve their nutritional status, they have
to follow nutritional guidelines.

A. EAT A VARIETY OF FOODS EVERY DAY

B. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT


Reaching and maintaining healthy weight is a very important to the overall health. It helps to prevent and
control diseases, illness and considerable conditions. A person who is obese or overweight is at high risk of
developing serious health problems.

C. EAT FOODS THAT ARE LOW IN FAT, SATURATED FAT, and CHOLESTEROL
Choose food with healthy fat, and limit those which are high in fat. Food with trans-fat should be avoided as
well as bad fats increase disease risks…

D. AVOID TOO MUCH CHOLESTROL IN ONE’S DIET


Lowering cholesterol is important for everyone, whether young, middle aged, adult, men or women, with or
without heart disease. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it builds up walls in the arteries that
causes “hardening of the arteries”, and when this happens, arteries become narrow so the blood that flows to
the hearts slows down and gets blocked.

E. EAT PLENTY OF VEGETABLES


Eating this kind of foods has many benefits to one’s health. First, it can reduce the risk of heart diseases
including heart attack and stroke. Second, it can protect a person against certain types of cancer. Third, it can
reduce the risk of obesity and 2 types of diabetes. Fourth, it can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of
developing kidney stones. Fifth, it can help prevent bone loss. Lastly, it can help lower calorie intake.

F. USE SUGAR IN MODERATION


The amount of sugar in one’s diet should be limited. Too much sugar intake may result to several health
complications and diseases. Some of them, are cavities, insatiable hunger, weight gain, insulin resistance,
diabetes, and obesity.

G. AVOID EXCESSIVE INTAKE OF SALTY FOODS


Eating too much salty foods may increase the risk of having high blood pressure. High blood pressure, in
return, might result to stroke, heart failure, or heart attack. That is why, it is very important to observe a
healthy and well-balanced diet.

NUTRITIONAL PROBLEMS OF ADOLESCENTS
“ADOLESCENTS” is a stage of growth characterized by various changes. These include changes in nutritional needs.

SOME COMMON NUTRITIONAL PROBLEMS FACED BY ADOLESCENTS

A. MALNUTRITION
Malnutrition id the condition of not having enough food or not having the right kind of food for good health.
This can potentially affect proper growth and development, especially among adolescents. Since the
adolescents nowadays have more access to various types of unhealthy food which can be bought almost 50
anywhere there are high risk of malnutrition. Minutes

B. EATING DISORDER
Teenagers have common issues like distorted body image and low self-esteem which may lead to eating
disorders or other self-destructive behaviors.

a.) Anorexia Nervosa


 This is a complex eating disorder also referred to as anorexia. It is defined by an extremely low body
weight relative to stature, extreme and needless weight loss, illogical fear of weight gain, and
distorted perception of self-image and body image.

b.) Bulimia Nervosa


 Simply known as bulimia. It is an eating disorder characterized by huge eating followed by purging.
 BINGE EATING means eating a large amount of food in a short period of time.
 PURGING means an attempt to get rid of the food consumed.

C. COMPULSIVE EATING DISORDER


Eating disorder which is caused by a great desire for food which is too strong to resist or stop. People with this
disorder are addicted to food to the point of excessive consumption.
