Background of the
diet
When?
It first hit the internet around 2010
Who invented it
?
It was rumored that Jennifer Aniston went
on a baby food diet to lose a quick seven
pounds to shoot a movie, suggested by her
celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson. Soon
after the trend caught on, people started
doing it to lose wight fast
How does it work?

7
How does it work?
It is based on the idea that eating small jars of
baby food to restrict calorie intake will lead to
quick weight loss. The original version, which
was never formally published despite
anecdotal reports and weight-loss claims,
called for eating baby food all day followed
by a regular "adult" meal in the evening.
How does it work?
It is generally unseasoned, so adding herbs and
spices will make them more palatable. For the
single "adult" meal of the day, proponents of the
diet advise keeping the calorie count to around
500.
It's important that to pack this meal with plenty of
protein, fiber, whole grains, and healthy fats to
account for the nutrients that are not available
from pureed baby food.

The Evidence Base

12
Is it evidence base?
Studies
Most reports of weight loss on the baby
food diet are anecdotal. According to
people who've tried it, it can help you
lose weight in the short term.
However, there's currently no scientific
evidence to back up these claims or to
prove it's an effective diet for long-term
weight loss

Based on Lianna Hursh, she lost 2.4
pounds in just 3 days though she did
not feel well. She said she finds herself
significantly less tempted to indulge in
greasy and processed food.

wight went from 49.9kg to 48.8kg a mere
1.1kg. She was skeptic and believe it
could be just water loss and quickly
regained her weight back.
Comparing Diet to
Guidelines

17
Comparing diet to
Guidelines guidelines:
• The U.S. Department of Agriculture
2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for
Americans recommends consuming a
variety of nutrient-dense foods including
all types of vegies, legumes, fruits,
whole grains, dairy products or lactose-
free substitutes, fortified soy
products, lean protein, eggs, seafood,
nuts, and other healthy fats like oils.
Comparing diet to
Guidelines guidelines:
• In terms of calories, 2.5 ounces of baby
food (a typical serving) contains
anywhere from 20 to 100 calories.
Having baby food twice per day, plus
one 500-calorie meal falls short of the
USDA's recommended intake of about
1,500 calories a day for weight loss.
Comparing diet to
Guidelines guidelines:
• Baby foods meet the American Heart
Association’s (AHA) sodium
recommendations for a 1- to 3-year-
old child: less than 800 milligrams of
sodium a day. This is the same amount
that the AHA recommends for adults,
as well.
Comparing diet to
Guidelines guidelines:
• The nutrition guidelines of the
American Diabetes Association state
that all diets should be pleasurable and
practical. An eating plan should help
you make healthy food choices. Baby
food diet falls short in both of these
respects.
Safety and
Sustainability

22
Is it safe and sustainable?
Some people claim that baby foods are
healthier because they don't always
contain any food additives. It tends to
be low in fat, and apart from pureed
fruits and some vegetables, may also be
low in sugar. Regardless, the baby food
diet is not a sustainable weight loss
plan.
Potential
Consequences

24
What are the potential
consequences?
There are no studies on the risks of baby food
diet but following a very low-calorie diet for a
prolonged period could lead to nutrient
deficiencies and malnutrition. Eliminating
entire food groups can create unhealthy eating
habits
