Lomonosov Moscow State University

Lomonosov Moscow State University is the oldest and largest classic university in
Russia. Founded in 1755, it now is an important scientific and cultural center uniting 43
faculties, 12 educational institutions and other structures.
Every year over 40 thousand students study at the MSU, 5 thousand are foreign
students from 80 countries. The students are trained by 9 thousand teachers holding
doctoral degrees

Foreign students undergo training at the Institute of Russian Language and Culture before entering
the main faculties of the MSU. The IRLC is the first preparatory faculty for foreign students in Russia
(founded in 1954). More than 50 thousand foreign citizens from 130 countries have graduated from the

Institute.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

Pre-University Programme
The programme is aimed at those who intend to enter one of the faculties at MSU or to prepare
themselves for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The programme includes:
 General Russian Language course;
 Russian for Academic Purposes course;
 Courses in the humanities and sciences.
Class sizes are kept small. Groups consist of no more than 10 students in the Russian language
classes and of no more than 20 students in the classes in other subjects. Academic curriculum includes
lessons five days a week, 6-8 academic hours per day. The course could be one academic year (two
semesters) or one and a half academic years (three semesters). At the end of academic year the
students take exams in Russian and subjects of their specialization. After passing the course
examinations, students receive corresponding certificates. These allow them to enroll in one of the
main faculties of MSU according to their specialization.

Russian Language Programmes


Russian Language Programmes are available for foreign students at all levels during the academic
year (September – June) and during the summer courses (July – August). The minimum period of
study is 4 weeks.
Upon arriving at the Institute all students are offered an assessment test on the basis of which the
right level is recommended. Groups are formed in accordance with the results of the test, duration and
purpose of study. Groups normally consist of 8-10 students.
The main objective of the programmes is to build and develop practical Russian language skills such
as speaking, listening, reading and writing. Special attention is paid to the following aspects:
 fluency and accuracy in oral communication
 listening for comprehension and information
 writing skills
 vocabulary development
 Russian grammar
 phonetics (as part of every lesson)

For beginners and elementary level students the Institute offers a full-time tuition programme
(26 academic hours per week). The programme includes the general Russian language course,
grammar, phonetics and oral speech training.
For students of intermediate and advanced levels we offer:
- A full time tuition programme providing 26 academic hours per week (5 days a week). The
programme includes 18 academic hours of Russian language studies and 8 hours of elective subjects
(chosen by the student) that currently include:
 Colloquial Russian
 Difficulties of Russian grammar
 Language of Russian Mass Media
 “The Russian World”
 Business Russian
 Russian History and Literature

-A part-time tuition programme providing 18 academic hours per week (3 days a week). This
programme is more focused on oral communication skills.

Upon successful completion of their programme students receive a certificate. They also have
an option to take a test and obtain a state-approved certificate.

Russian as a foreign language teachers training and re-training programmes


The course of professional training (1-2 semesters) allows to obtain the following qualification:
Teacher of Russian as a foreign language. Distant tuition is available.
Refresher courses (1 to 6 months) offers lessons on methodology of Russian as a foreign language
teaching. The flexible tuition programme allows to concentrate on those aspects, which are more
interesting and vital for the students.
The trainieeship (1 to 10 months) is based on an individual time-table and hence is particularly
convenient while carrying out research work. The trainees visit classes and tutorials of the teachers of
the CIE; work in Moscow libraries.
Upon completion of the programme students and trainees receive corresponding certificates.

Russian as a Foreign Language Testing


The testing is designed for those students, who require a state-approved certificate, providing evidence
of their fluency in Russian.
Our Institute offers:
 certificate examinations
 tests for acquiring citizenship

Excursions and Cultural Programmes


No educational course at our Institute would be complete without introduction to Russian cultural and
historical heritage and Russian national traditions.
Students of our Institute are offered assistance in booking tickets to various Moscow theatres and
concert venues. We arrange a variety of sightseeing tours around Moscow and Moscow area, as well as
excursions to famous Moscow museums and trips to other Russian cities and historical places.
The excursions usually take place out of study hours and during weekends. Students are duly informed
about all cultural programmes.
The cost of excursions and other extra-curriculum activities is not included in the tuition fee.

ENROLMENT AND STUDY GUIDELINES

Invitation and Visa

To study at the IRLC applicants are requested to fill in an application form and to submit it
(preferably by e-mail) to the IRLC Recruitment and Enrolment Office, together with a copy of the
applicant’s passport, no later than a month and a half before the proposed date of arrival.
The application form and other relevant information are available on our website: www.irlc.msu.ru.
Important! Note that the applicant’s passport should be valid for a period of at least 18 months
following the proposed date of arrival to Moscow.
The above documents are required by the IRLC for the MSU International Office to issue an official
invitation on our behalf. The invitation is then sent by e-mail to the applicant.
Having received the invitation, the applicant can apply for a visa at the nearest Russian Consulate.
When filling in a visa application form, make sure that the field “Purpose of Journey” reads
“Education”, and the field “Institution” reads “Lomonosov Moscow State University”
Visas and passports of foreign students who have arrived in Russia with purposes other than to
study at this institution cannot be registered by the IRLC.

Registration

Registration is an official confirmation of the right of a foreign citizen to stay in Russia for a
certain period of time. Students must submit their passport and migration card to the IRLC within
three working days from the date of their arrival in Moscow, in order to validate their registration and
a multiple entry visa by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The registration charges are paid in full by the
applicant.
The registration and visa are only valid for the period of study (maximum one academic year).
Should the period of study be extended, the registration can be extended accordingly. In case of
withdrawal from the programme prior to the end of the agreed period of study, the registration
becomes invalid.
The regulations and procedures dealing with visas and registration are established by the Russian
Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Enrolment

Upon arrival at the IRLC applicants are required to submit the following documents:
 a passport with an entrance visa or a stamp of registration in Russia
 a certificate confirming that an applicant has no HIV virus or AIDS disease.
 a certificate confirming that an applicant has a medical insurance valid in Russia
 documents confirming that an applicant has paid all fees due to the CIE
 4 passport size matte photos
Applicants who have applied for Pre-University
Programmes should also submit the following documents:
 an education certificate or diploma legalized in their home country accompanied by a complete
record of academic performance relevant to their proposed level and field of studies and a copy of
these documents certified by a notary
 an additional medical certificate from a Russian clinic
All applicants must sign a contract with the IRLC.

Admission to the IRLC for any course can only be granted to an applicant with a signed contract,
the required documents from previous educational institutions, a receipt confirming the settlement of
all fees due and a passport registered by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Terms of study

The IRLC provides tuition in Russian in accordance with the course of study and study programmes
depending on the chosen subjects, goals, and forms of study as stated in the student’s contract. Study
groups are formed by the IRLC administration according to the educational needs and the syllabi and
can be reformed at any time if required.
The IRLC gives an opportunity to the students to purchase required study materials, including audio
and video materials. Also the students can use the library, audio collections, video- and computer
classes of the Institute.
The IRLC provides the students with the official documents verifying their status as fully registered
members of the University.
Students are expected to attend classes, complete academic assignments, observe the University
rules and regulations.
The IRLC is not responsible for students’ failure to attend classes and has no obligation to make up for
any missed classes.
There will be no classes on the days of Russian public holidays that coincide with teaching days.
Those students who successfully complete their course of study receive a certificate to that effect from
the IRLC.
The IRLC reserves the right to expel any student who is in breach of the laws of the Russian
Federation, is found unfit to study for medical or other reasons, has failed to meet the terms of the
contract or has behaved in a prejudicial manner adverse to the running of the IRLC.

General Terms of Payment


1. Tuition fees should be paid in advance before the course commences.

2. Money can be transferred into the account indicated by the IRLC or paid in cash to
the bank in Moscow. All bank charges and other operational expenses such as currency
exchange commissions or cheque encashment, etc., are borne by the payer.
3. Course fees are calculated according to complete weeks, including weeks with public
holidays.
4. The cost of the health insurance for 12 months is up to 200 $ US.

ACCOMMODATION
The students of the IRLC live in different hostels of the MSU, 2-4 students in one
room.
The accommodation costs up to 300 $ US a month for each person.
The accommodation fees may change during the academic year.
Accommodation fees are not included in tuition fees and are paid for separately on
the basis of a contract with the MSU hostel administration.

All payments in Russia are made in roubles in accordance with the exchange rate
of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
