I believe that good leadership is constituted by a number of values, among which are the courage of taking

action personally rather than delegating others, problem solving, accurate observation for the detection of

strength and weaknesses, along with the ability to motivate and inspire.

Ever since I was a child, I have loved my parents with all my heart, and as I grew up, I took upon me the

responsibility to always look after them, but never thought of this as a burden.

Later on, when I was studying at university, there was a shortage of gas in the student flats just as winter was
coming. The gas was eventually provided two months late, so, as I was uncomfortable with the poor service, I

enquired why that happened: I was advised that this poor service was a yearly routine. I took upon me to take
action and went to speak with various institutions, but eventually I was informed the issue could not be solved
internally as the gas was provided by the government municipality’s administration. I managed to not lose hope,

and decided to take the matter to the next level, involving the rest of the student community. Using the good
relationship I had built with my fellow students, we managed to collect hundreds of signatures to petition the

local government for a change, or at least for a chance to have our voices heard. The petition turned out to be

successful: I was allowed to visit the government office and the issue was solved shortly after. 

region. It was the early stages of the war in Syria, and many refugees had fled to Iraqi Kurdistan in hope of

safety. The camp was already closing to its full capacity, so we had to carry out further checks on incoming

refugees to monitor the availability of resources. While we could only host 3,000 more refugees, we received

5,700 instead, especially because most of them were travelling in family groups. We knew we could not support
everyone on our own, so I decided to appeal to the rest of the population via one of the national TV channels. A

report was made showing the emergency and the necessity of any available help, and this proved successful:

thousands of local people found it in their hearts to help according to their means, donating food and clothes.

While it is true that there is always space for learning and improvement, I am confident that my past experience

can be considered as a stepping stone for an opportunity to become a leader in my beloved country. Studying in

the United Kingdom will provide the chance for me to experience new cultures and share ideas, developing the
strong points that will hopefully help me and my countrymen to improve our society wherever necessary and

build a brighter tomorrow for the next generations.
