Role of Gypsum in Cement

• regulates setting time
• prevents flash setting
• makes Portland cement concrete workable for hours
• has influence of
grindability, sensitivity to storage, volume stability and strength

IT`S AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT !

Effects of Gypsum on
• Grindability of cement
Clinker is ground more easily than plain clinker

Effects of Gypsum on
• Flowability and lump formation
can cause blockages, because gypsum dehydrates and
clinker hydrates and forms lumps

Effects of Gypsum on
• Setting
starts approx. 1 hours after adding water, otherwise
immediatly

Effects of Gypsum
on
• Strength and volume stability
increases strength and
prevents shrinkages up to a
certain limit

Specific Surface Area
• largely determines the rate of
hydration
setting and hardening
• higher fineness
faster hardening and strength
development
• determined by Blaine method

Page: 8
Blaine Method
• is calculated from the air permeability of a cement sample
compacted under defined conditions
• can mislead with blended Portland
Cement or when clinker
contains underbunt material

The relations between fineness of cement (Blaine) and
concrete properties can be summarized as follows:
• Increasing the fineness of cement, reduces the amount of bleeding
in concrete
• Increasing the fineness of cement above 3000, increases somewhat
the water requirement of concrete. Compared to the influences other
than cement on the water requirement of concrete, the influence of
cement fineness is considerably smaller
•The strength of concrete is influenced by the fineness of cement. The
early compressive strength increases with an increase in cement
fineness. The difference in compressive strength due to the difference
in fineness of cement, is considerably smaller at 28 days and at later
age
•The fineness of cement influences the drying shrinkage of concrete.
When the water content is increased because of fineness, the drying
shrinkage is increased.

Particle Size Distribution
• 2nd criteria determining the properties of a particular cement
composition
• important in particular with respect to strength of standard
mortar
• carried out by sieving or sedimentation methods

• Residues on sieves of a definite size (32, 60, 90, 200 µm)

• The percentage of particles of a definite class
• The uniformity factor ”n” according to Rosin, Rammler and
Sperling (RRS).
