Principles
of Arts

9
Notes to the Teacher
This part of the module will help our student to understand the
different functions of Art. By realizing the functions, they will
know the significance of different art forms from the region,
specifically Region 3. You may find or add other art forms that
are available within the region. Different platforms of promoting
contemporary arts will be presented. However, let your student’s
creativity exude in doing so.

What’s New

Do you think art must communicate? All arts have functions, same thing with man
as the Maker creates him. There are commemorative works from different sculptures,
paintings that influences social behavior or even simple objects, like spoon,
determine its functions based on its forms. This part of the lesson will discuss the
functions of art.

Functions of Art
1. Aesthetic – Because of art, man becomes conscious of the beauty of nature. It
speaks about set of principles underlying the works of a particular art. For example,
a painting of sunset or sunrise.

2. Utilitarian – With the creation of different arts forms, it brings comfort to people’s
lives. Art not only enriches man’s life but also improves nature through landscape,
gardening, creation of super highways, civic centres and community planning. Tools
and containers are objects which function to make our lives physically comfortable.
For example, the Nipa Hut.

3. Social – It provides forums of ideas with which to interact, through civic and
graphic arts, man learned how to interact to help each other. As art communicates,
most often it is constructed with the intention of sharing responses to and opinions
about life with others. For example, Noli Me Tangere.

10
4. Cultural – Through the printed matter, art transmit and preserves skills and
knowledge from one generation to another. Different studies of art shows that it
represents different worldviews, religious beliefs, political ideas, social values,
kinship structures, economic relations, and historical memory. It reflects upon the
society’s values, ideas and concerns. For example, the Pyramids of Egypt.

5. Physical – It gives a moment of relaxation and spiritual happiness. For example,

the therapeutic value of music that we cannot ignore.

11
What is It

The Philippines has a wider and more vigorous artistic community than any other
Southeast Asian nations because it has four cultural heritages. This lesson focuses
on different arts forms from the region, specifically region 3.
