Mga Kababayan ko
By: Francis Magalona

Mga kababayan ko
Dapat lang malaman nyo
Bilib ako sa kulay ko
Ako ay Pilipino
Kung may itim o may puti
Mayron naman kayumangi
Isipin mo na kaya mong
Abutin ang yung minimithi

Francis Michael Durango Magalona, popularly known as Francis M, was a Filipino rapper,
musician, songwriter, entrepreneur, actor, and television personality who lived from October 4,
1964 to March 6, 2009. He is largely considered to be the best and most successful Filipino
rapper of all time. He is widely referred to as the “Father of Pinoy Hip-Hop,” as he was the first
Filipino rapper to break into the mainstream in the Philippines. He influenced a lot of artists in
the Pinoy hip-hop scene and the local rap community. Magalona received a Presidential Medal
of Merit after his death. The prize was granted “for his musical and artistic talent, his great faith
in the Filipino, and his sense of national pride that continue to inspire us,” according to the
citation.
Yo!, Francis M’s debut album, was released. His album featured hit singles like “Mga
Kababayan,” “Goota Let ‘Cha Know,” “Cold Summer Nights,” and “Loving You,” a duet with
Pia Arroyo. It was a big success and helped boost Filipino hip hop from underground to
mainstream status, as well as the birth of Makabayang (nationalistic) rap in Filipino hip hop.
Also, some of his songs tackled about various cultural and social problems in the Philippines like
drug addiction as well as political stability, and the detrimental effects of colonial mentality
